(PRESS RELEASE) NORWICH, 13-Aug-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — The University of East Anglia (UEA) has commenced construction on a state-of-the-art anatomy training center aimed at enhancing the education of future healthcare professionals in the region. This new facility, a two-storey extension to the Edith Cavell Building, is strategically located next to the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital, ensuring students have access to cutting-edge resources for their training.

Scheduled for completion in late 2025 and operational in 2026, the new Anatomy Suite will encompass 390 square meters of advanced teaching space, featuring seminar rooms, an immersive anatomy teaching environment, and upgraded preparation areas. This expansion is crucial for addressing the growing demand for training spaces necessary for developing practical skills in healthcare education.

With NHS recruitment being a primary focus of the government, the Anatomy Suite is set to play a pivotal role in cultivating the next generation of healthcare professionals, thereby supporting both regional and national workforce needs. Charles ffrench-Constant, Pro-Vice-Chancellor of the UEA Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, emphasized the importance of this modernization, stating, “Our anatomy teaching facilities have been at the heart of our healthcare student training for two decades, and this upgrade will significantly increase our capacity and enhance the training experience.”

The new facility will adhere to contemporary standards established by the World Health Organization, addressing recent legislation on the use of formaldehyde in preservation processes. This ensures UEA’s compliance with health and safety regulations, which the current facilities are unable to meet.

Stephen Chapman, Senior Faculty Manager for UEA Medicine and Health Sciences, highlighted the facility’s potential: “The new Anatomy Suite will be a worldwide exemplar facility incorporating current best practices. Meeting the needs of an expanding NHS requires major increases in student numbers, and this development will enable us to meet that demand effectively.”

The Anatomy Suite will not only support undergraduate and postgraduate courses, including MB BS and MSc Physician Associate Studies, but also provide opportunities for specialized training and research, contributing to national healthcare advancements.

Designed by LSI Architects, the project has received substantial funding, including a £4.8 million grant from the Office for Students, supplemented by contributions from UEA’s Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences.

For prospective students looking to start their university journey in September 2024, UEA invites applications through its Clearing process, offering a chance to join a UK Top 25 university.
