(PRESS RELEASE) BÆRUM, 4-Sep-2024— /EuropaWire/ — At the SMM trade fair, Huangpu Wenchong Shipbuilding Company (HPWS) has received approval in principle (AiP) certificates from DNV, a leading classification society, for three groundbreaking ship designs that emphasize sustainability and green technology. The awarded designs include an ammonia-fueled midsize gas carrier, an ammonia-fueled container ship, and an LNG dual-fueled ice-class container ship.

The newly approved designs reflect HPWS’s commitment to advancing environmentally friendly maritime solutions in line with the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) decarbonization targets for 2050. The ammonia-fueled 43,000 cbm midsize gas carrier (MGC) features a wider beam, allowing for greater cargo capacity, while its ammonia-powered engine enables zero-emission operations. The SWAN 3,500 TEU ammonia-fueled container ship includes advanced safety measures to handle ammonia’s toxic properties, ensuring reliability and safety. Additionally, the LNG dual-fueled SWAN 1,300 TEU container ship is designed for intra-European routes, featuring ice-class capabilities to operate in colder climates while aligning with decarbonization goals.

Han Jianbing, Vice General Manager of HPWS, expressed gratitude for the collaboration with DNV, stating, “These approvals showcase our dedication to overcoming maritime industry challenges. DNV’s expertise has been vital in developing these innovative vessels, furthering our leadership in green fuels and decarbonization technologies.”

Norbert Kray, DNV’s Senior Vice President and Maritime Regional Manager for Greater China, congratulated HPWS on the milestone, emphasizing DNV’s commitment to supporting sustainable innovation in the shipping industry. “We are honored to work with HPWS in creating designs that push the boundaries of sustainability in maritime operations,” Kray noted.

The partnership between DNV and HPWS, which began in 1996, has resulted in the classification of over 250 vessels, with an additional 20 ships currently under construction. This collaboration continues to pave the way for advancements in green maritime technology, solidifying HPWS’s role as a leader in the industry.
