HOCHTIEF to Build Research Hub and Modern Event Space for University of Duisburg-Essen

(IN BRIEF) HOCHTIEF has been commissioned by the University of Duisburg-Essen to construct a new interdisciplinary research center on its Essen campus and to convert a historic boiler house in Krefeld into a state-of-the-art event venue. The five-story research facility will house advanced laboratories focused on materials science, energy, water, and biosciences, and will integrate sustainable features such as photovoltaics and e-mobility infrastructure. Construction begins in late summer 2025 and is expected to finish in spring 2028. HOCHTIEF will also oversee the full planning and phased execution of the event center on the Mies van der Rohe campus.

(PRESS RELEASE) ESSEN, 21-Jul-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — HOCHTIEF has been awarded two significant construction and redevelopment projects by the University of Duisburg-Essen, marking a major contribution to the institution’s research and cultural infrastructure. The projects include the construction of a cutting-edge research center in Essen and the transformation of a former boiler house in Krefeld into a high-tech event venue.

The new research building on the Essen campus will span five stories, designed to foster interdisciplinary collaboration in a wide range of scientific fields including nano- and material sciences, energy systems, water research, microbiome and protein studies, and chemical and environmental science. A highlight of the facility is a 4,100-square-meter laboratory complex, outfitted with the latest equipment to support world-class scientific inquiry.

In line with the University’s focus on sustainability, the building will feature a large-scale photovoltaic system, e-mobility infrastructure, and ample bicycle parking. Construction is slated to begin in late summer 2025, with completion targeted for spring 2028.

Meanwhile, in Krefeld, HOCHTIEF will convert a former boiler house on the Mies van der Rohe campus into a versatile concert and event center equipped with state-of-the-art technology. The space will host cultural events, lectures, and special programs, enhancing the university’s public engagement capabilities. HOCHTIEF will lead all planning services across every project phase, with commissioning taking place in multiple stages.

These projects demonstrate HOCHTIEF’s strength in delivering complex, future-focused infrastructure that bridges science, sustainability, and culture.
