Henkel introduces Bonderite M-AD 2000A to boost efficiency and sustainability in aluminum anodizing

Henkel research in action: The development of Bonderite M-AD 2000A demonstrates how additives can make anodizing processes more energy-efficient, sustainable and cost-effective.

(IN BRIEF) Henkel Adhesive Technologies has introduced Bonderite M-AD 2000A, an innovative additive designed to improve aluminum anodizing by increasing efficiency, reducing resource use, and lowering CO₂ emissions. The solution allows baths to run at higher temperatures of up to 24 °C, reducing cooling energy needs and extending bath life. Additional benefits include 25% lower sulfuric acid consumption, 25% less aluminum loss, and faster process times. Backed by Qualanod certification and long-term outdoor testing, the additive has already shown strong results in industrial trials. The product is available in Europe and will soon expand worldwide.

(PRESS RELEASE) DÜSSELDORF, 29-Aug-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Henkel Adhesive Technologies has launched Bonderite M-AD 2000A, a new additive for aluminum anodizing that makes the process more efficient, cost-effective, and sustainable. The innovation allows anodizing baths to operate at temperatures of up to 24 °C, compared to the conventional 18–20 °C, significantly reducing the energy required for cooling and extending bath life — all while maintaining the quality and durability of anodized layers.

Anodized aluminum profiles in various colors: The new Bonderite M-AD 2000A additive ensures a consistently high quality of the anodized layer while reducing energy and material consumption.

Developed for companies that perform aluminum anodizing either as a core treatment or a pre-anodizing step, Bonderite M-AD 2000A focuses on reducing resource consumption and improving operational efficiency. By stabilizing the anodizing bath chemistry, the additive lowers sulfuric acid usage by about 25% and reduces aluminum loss by one quarter. Process times are cut by an average of 15%, while bath service life is extended by up to 25%, decreasing the need for frequent disposal and replenishment.

“Our customers want sustainable and economical production solutions without sacrificing performance. Bonderite M-AD 2000A delivers on both fronts by lowering costs, energy use, and material demand while ensuring reliable results,” explained Darshan Mehta, Business Development Manager, Light Metal Treatment at Henkel.

The additive has been awarded Qualanod certification, confirming its performance and durability under demanding real-world conditions. Long-term outdoor weathering tests in coastal locations such as Hook of Holland and Genoa demonstrated its resistance and quality. With Qualanod approval, Bonderite M-AD 2000A is cleared for use by all member companies of the international certification body. Early industrial trials under production conditions have validated its benefits, showing notable savings in energy and chemicals alongside consistently high coating quality.

Bonderite M-AD 2000A is now commercially available in Europe, with Henkel planning to roll it out gradually to other global markets where aluminum anodizing is a critical process in production.
