Henkel Adhesive Technologies advances portfolio transformation with stricter sustainability methodology and deeper customer insights

Henkel´s successful HEART-tool now also calculates use-phase emissions of products.

(IN BRIEF) Henkel Adhesive Technologies has advanced its sustainability strategy by updating its portfolio assessment methodology with stricter, independently audited criteria and by expanding its digital reporting platform, HEART, to include use-phase emissions in addition to cradle-to-gate Product Carbon Footprints. The enhanced approach strengthens the integration of sustainability into business steering, provides greater transparency to customers, and supports more data-driven decision-making across the value chain. With the new use-phase tool covering up to 75 percent of emissions for key product categories, Henkel can now offer tailored recommendations that help customers reduce emissions, lower energy use, and optimize performance, reinforcing its leadership in sustainable adhesive solutions.

(PRESS RELEASE) SINGAPORE, 3-Feb-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — Henkel Adhesive Technologies is accelerating the integration of sustainability across its entire value chain while significantly expanding transparency for customers through an enhanced portfolio assessment approach and the further development of its digital reporting platform. Building on its Sustainability Ambition 2030, the business unit is strengthening the way environmental considerations are embedded into strategic decision-making and operational steering, balancing traditional commercial performance with measurable sustainability impact.

Since 2023, Henkel has implemented a structured sustainability portfolio assessment methodology that classifies products into four sustainability categories based on their performance across key dimensions, including climate, circularity, safety, and nature. This framework provides a consistent and company-wide view of sustainability performance throughout the product lifecycle and supports more informed business decisions. The methodology has now been updated to reflect stricter criteria, ensuring alignment with evolving regulatory requirements, customer expectations, and Henkel’s commitments to net-zero emissions and responsible chemistry. The revised approach has been independently audited, and the results from 2023 and 2024 indicate that initial transformation measures are already delivering tangible progress toward a more sustainable and resilient product portfolio.

Henkel has translated its sustainability ambition into a comprehensive portfolio assessment methodology, and the outcomes were audited by an independent third party.

To further enhance transparency at the product level, Henkel introduced the Henkel Environmental Assessment Reporting Tool (HEART) in 2024. The platform automatically calculates cradle-to-gate Product Carbon Footprints (PCFs) based on verified data covering raw materials, manufacturing processes, packaging, and logistics. HEART has become a central element of Henkel’s transparency strategy, enabling structured data exchange with customers and fostering closer collaboration on sustainability initiatives.

Building on the strong adoption of HEART, Henkel Adhesive Technologies has now expanded the platform to include use-phase emissions, recognizing that a significant portion of environmental impact occurs during the application or processing of adhesive products in industrial settings. This new capability allows Henkel experts to model emissions based on specific customer application conditions, taking into account energy consumption and operational variables. By integrating this information into HEART, Henkel can provide more comprehensive sustainability insights and identify opportunities for customers to reduce emissions, lower energy usage, and improve overall process efficiency.

The use-phase tool is currently available for general bonding and surface treatment products and covers up to 75 percent of the use-phase emissions associated with Henkel’s adhesive portfolio. This expanded scope enables Henkel to offer data-driven recommendations tailored to individual customer operations, supporting the transition toward more sustainable product solutions and manufacturing practices.

Ulla Hüppe, Vice President Sustainability at Henkel Adhesive Technologies, emphasized that these advancements represent a significant step forward in the company’s broader sustainability journey. She highlighted that closer integration between sustainability and business strategy will drive stronger alignment and value creation, while continued investment in transparency, collaboration, and innovation will remain central to Henkel’s long-term commitment to sustainable transformation in the adhesive industry.
