Gasum and Hapag-Lloyd Partner to Advance Green Shipping with 20,000 Tons of Bio-LNG Supply

Gasum and Hapag-Lloyd Partner to Advance Green Shipping with 20,000 Tons of Bio-LNG Supply

(IN BRIEF) Gasum has partnered with Hapag-Lloyd to supply 20,000 metric tons of waste-based bio-LNG over two years as part of the Zero Emission Maritime Buyers Alliance (ZEMBA) initiative. The bio-LNG, which significantly reduces greenhouse gas emissions, will be used on a shipping route between Rotterdam and Singapore from 2025 to 2026. This partnership supports Hapag-Lloyd’s goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2045 and highlights the maritime sector’s shift towards sustainable fuels.

(PRESS RELEASE) ESPOO, 3-Sep-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — In a significant move towards greener maritime transport, Gasum, a leading energy company, has announced its partnership with Hapag-Lloyd, one of the world’s top container shipping companies, to supply 20,000 metric tons of waste-based bio-LNG over a two-year period. This collaboration is part of the Zero Emission Maritime Buyers Alliance (ZEMBA) initiative, which aims to accelerate the adoption of zero-emission solutions in the shipping industry.

Hapag-Lloyd secured the first ZEMBA tender earlier this year, committing to use bio-LNG that reduces greenhouse gas emissions by at least 90%. The bio-LNG supplied by Gasum will be used on a key shipping route between Rotterdam and Singapore from 2025 to 2026, showcasing the feasibility of sustainable fuels in large-scale operations.

Gasum’s bio-LNG, produced from waste materials such as biowaste and sewage sludge, offers a renewable and environmentally friendly alternative to traditional fossil fuels, with significantly lower lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions. The partnership aligns with Hapag-Lloyd’s goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2045 and underscores the growing momentum in the maritime sector towards sustainable energy solutions.

Jacob Granqvist, VP of Maritime at Gasum, highlighted the importance of this agreement, stating, “This partnership with Hapag-Lloyd is a clear indication that the maritime sector is embracing the green transition. By supplying bio-LNG, we are enabling immediate and significant reductions in emissions, contributing to a more sustainable future for global shipping.”

With this partnership, Gasum continues to expand its role as a key supplier of renewable energy in the maritime sector, offering bio-LNG bunkering services across Northern Europe. The company’s commitment to providing 7 TWh of renewable gas annually by 2027 is a critical step towards reducing the carbon footprint of the shipping industry and supporting global sustainability goals.
