Garanti BBVA moves sustainability financing online after surpassing TRY 400 billion target, sets new goal of TRY 3.5 trillion

(IN BRIEF) Garanti BBVA has digitalized its sustainability loans, moving the product from branch-only access to online and mobile platforms. Customers in Türkiye can now apply digitally for financing that supports green initiatives such as decarbonization, energy efficiency, sustainable agriculture, water management, and social infrastructure. The move reduces costs, time, and paper use, while improving access and transparency, as funds are credited directly to borrowers’ accounts and documented through invoices. Executive Vice President Cemal Onaran noted that the initiative supports the bank’s role in helping Türkiye transition to a low-carbon, inclusive economy. Having already reached its TRY 400 billion sustainable finance target for 2018–2025, Garanti BBVA has increased its goal to TRY 3.5 trillion by 2029, with TRY 3.1 trillion still to be funded in the coming years.

(PRESS RELEASE) ISTANBUL, 2-Oct-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Garanti BBVA, BBVA’s franchise in Türkiye, has expanded access to sustainability-linked financing by moving its sustainability loan applications from physical branches to its digital channels. The loans, previously available only in-branch, can now be applied for through the bank’s mobile and online platforms, allowing both corporate clients and retail customers to obtain funds faster and with greater convenience while reducing operational costs, paper use, and processing times.

With this step, Garanti BBVA strengthens its position as a leader in sustainable finance in Türkiye, providing clients with easier access to capital for projects that cut carbon emissions, improve energy efficiency, and support environmental and social initiatives. The bank already offers a wide range of green financial products, including eco-friendly vehicle loans, sustainable bonds, advisory services for environmental and social projects, and “blue finance” dedicated to water efficiency.

Cemal Onaran, Executive Vice President at Garanti BBVA, emphasized the significance of the move: “By digitizing sustainability loans, we make it easier for individuals and companies to accelerate their decarbonization and efficiency plans. This change improves speed, efficiency, and access, while aligning with our mission to contribute to Türkiye’s transition to a low-carbon and more inclusive economy.”

Borrowers can access sustainability loans at favorable rates to fund projects such as sustainable agriculture, circular economy initiatives, water management, climate change mitigation, and social infrastructure. To ensure accountability, customers are required to document their sustainability-related spending with invoices. The approved funds are deposited directly into borrowers’ accounts, rather than to creditors, guaranteeing greater transparency.

Garanti BBVA’s progress reflects its broader commitments. Having achieved its 2018–2025 sustainable finance target of TRY 400 billion in the first half of 2025, the bank has now raised its ambition, setting a new goal of TRY 3.5 trillion for 2018–2029. This means that between the second half of 2025 and the end of 2029, Garanti BBVA aims to channel an additional TRY 3.1 trillion into sustainable investments, further cementing its role in advancing Türkiye’s environmental and social development.
