European freight electrification accelerates with new megawatt-enabled HDV charging rollout

Truck at E.ON charging site

(IN BRIEF) E.ON, Voltix and GreenWay will deploy one of Europe’s largest megawatt-charging networks for electric trucks following approval of a €70.3 million EU grant. The HDV-E project will see around 330 MCS-compatible charging points installed across 55 logistics hubs in nine countries by 2028, each providing at least 1MW of power and 24/7 public access. The initiative is a major step toward mass electrification of heavy-duty road transport, enabling electric trucks to match diesel in refuelling speed and long-distance operability. With support from the Alternative Fuel Infrastructure Facility under CEF, the project strengthens European climate strategy and freight competitiveness. Leaders from E.ON, Voltix and GreenWay described the rollout as a critical lever for a zero-emission trucking future, helping freight operators electrify at scale and meeting EU decarbonisation goals.

(PRESS RELEASE) ESSEN, 26-Nov-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — E.ON, together with partners Voltix and GreenWay, has been awarded significant EU support to accelerate the build-out of megawatt-scale charging infrastructure for electric heavy-duty vehicles (HDVs) across Europe. The HDV-E project will play a central role in enabling long-distance zero-emission freight transport, with the European Union approving €70.3 million in funding to support deployment.

By autumn 2028, the initiative will establish roughly 330 High-Power Charging (HPC) points, each delivering at least 1 megawatt of capacity, powered by the latest Megawatt Charging System (MCS) standard. These units will be installed across 55 strategically placed locations in Germany, Austria, Denmark, Spain, France, the Netherlands, Sweden, Poland and Hungary. Every site will offer 24/7 public access, open roaming functionality and user-friendly payment options, ensuring strong interoperability for logistics operators travelling across borders.

The HDV-E rollout will become one of the largest megawatt-charging networks currently in development in Europe, marking a decisive turning point in the shift from diesel to battery-electric freight. With megawatt charging, e-trucks can achieve comparable range and turnaround times to combustion-engine vehicles, removing a key barrier to large-scale electrification. The project positions Europe as a leader in next-generation transport infrastructure and supports EU emissions-reduction targets, industry competitiveness and climate strategy.

“Only megawatt-level charging makes electric freight truly viable at scale,” said Timo Sillober, CEO of E.ON Drive Infrastructure.
“HDV-E builds the network required to match diesel performance — this is how climate goals materialise on Europe’s roads.”

Louis Du Pasquier, Managing Director of Voltix, added:
“The debate is no longer if electric decarbonised trucking will scale, but when.”
He highlighted the importance of dense, high-power corridors across major road networks to accelerate uptake.

Peter Badik, Founder and Chairman of GreenWay, emphasised the project’s meaning for the logistics sector:
“Megawatt charging unlocks long-distance, zero-emission freight. We are proud to support transport operators as they transition to cleaner operations across Europe.”

The HDV-E programme is co-financed under the Alternative Fuel Infrastructure Facility (AFIF) — an EU mechanism within the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) and administered by CINEA (European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency).

About E.ON Drive Infrastructure

Through its subsidiary E.ON Drive Infrastructure, E.ON builds, owns and operates public charging networks for all types of electric vehicles. The goal is to make charging easily accessible everywhere in Europe. Today, E.ON Drive Infrastructure already operates more than 8,000 public charging points in eleven European countries and continues to expand its network. www.edri.com

About Voltix

Voltix, a VINCI Concessions company, aims to decarbonize road freight transport by accelerating and supporting the transition of heavy goods vehicles to electric power. To achieve this, Voltix is developing public charging stations dedicated to heavy goods vehicles. Voltix was also laureate in February 2025 of the first call of the European CEF-AFIF funding to deploy megawatt charging stations for electric trucks in France. www.voltix-charging.com
