Evonik Strengthens Hydroxyl-Terminated Polybutadiene Production Network to Support Growing Demand

(IN BRIEF) Evonik is advancing its global growth strategy by expanding production capacity for hydroxyl-terminated polybutadienes (HTPB), following recent investments at its Marl site in Germany and a new POLYVEST® ST-E 60 facility in Shanghai. The company has now begun construction to significantly increase output at its German site, with the expanded capacity expected to come online in Q2 2027, while simultaneously initiating the engineering phase for a new production facility in Asia selected to complement its existing assets. Senior leadership highlighted that these investments are designed to enhance supply reliability, improve regional proximity to customers, and reinforce Evonik’s position as a leading global supplier of high-performance polymer materials.

(PRESS RELEASE) MARL, 7-Feb-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — Evonik is accelerating the implementation of its growth strategy by expanding its global manufacturing footprint for hydroxyl-terminated polybutadienes (HTPB), reinforcing its position as a leading supplier of high-performance polymer materials. Building on major investments made in recent years, the company is now moving forward with additional capacity increases to meet rising demand across key industrial markets.

Over the past two years, Evonik has already strengthened its HTPB production base through the expansion of its Marl site in Germany in 2024 and the commissioning of a new facility for POLYVEST® ST-E 60 polybutadienes in Shanghai, China, in 2025. These developments have laid the foundation for further scaling of its operations and enhancing supply security for customers worldwide.

Evonik is now advancing to the next phase of its capacity expansion programme. Construction work has begun to significantly increase output at its existing German production site, with the upgraded facilities expected to come online in the second quarter of 2027. This investment is aimed at improving operational efficiency and ensuring greater flexibility in responding to market needs.

In parallel, Evonik has launched the engineering phase for an additional production facility in Asia. While the exact location has not been disclosed, the company has confirmed that the site selection is based on strategic considerations, including the ability to integrate with Evonik’s existing assets and leverage operational synergies.

Dr. Jürgen Herwig, Head of Evonik’s polybutadienes business, stated that the location for the new plant was chosen after careful evaluation of its potential to complement Evonik’s current infrastructure and strengthen its regional presence. He emphasised that the expansion is aligned with the company’s long-term strategic objectives.

Dr. Anna Maria Ickert, Head of Evonik Coating & Adhesive Resins, highlighted that these investments reflect Evonik’s commitment to supporting customers through more reliable and locally accessible supply chains. She noted that proximity to key markets will play a crucial role in meeting growing global demand for HTPB-based solutions.

Overall, the capacity expansions underscore Evonik’s dedication to innovation, operational excellence, and the continued development of its global manufacturing network. By strengthening its production capabilities, the company aims to secure a stable and high-quality supply of advanced materials that are essential to a wide range of industrial applications.
