Evonik publishes EPDs for PROTECTOSIL® solutions, strengthening sustainability transparency in construction

(IN BRIEF) Evonik has released two Environmental Product Declarations for PROTECTOSIL® BHN and PROTECTOSIL® CIT through the IBU, providing life-cycle-based environmental data for building protection materials. The EPDs align with EU regulatory trends, anticipating requirements under the Construction Products Regulation. PROTECTOSIL® BHN serves as a hydrophobic impregnation for mineral substrates, while PROTECTOSIL® CIT protects reinforced concrete from corrosion and water absorption. According to Evonik, the solutions can extend building lifespan for a fraction of construction cost. Sustainability leads at the company emphasize that the declarations improve transparency, assist in building certification, and position Evonik as an industry leader in environmental reporting. The published EPDs offer architects and planners reliable documentation for life cycle calculations, project validation, and sustainable choosing of materials.

(PRESS RELEASE) ESSEN, 8-Dec-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Evonik has taken a new step toward greater sustainability and transparency in the construction sector with the publication of two Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) for its building protection solutions PROTECTOSIL® BHN and PROTECTOSIL® CIT. Released through the Institute for Construction and Environment (IBU), the declarations provide verified data on environmental performance across the products’ entire life cycle and are now available online to industry professionals.

The EPDs respond to a rising demand within the construction industry for objective, comparable environmental information. As the European Construction Products Regulation increasingly pushes for mandatory EPDs for specific product classes, Evonik is moving ahead of regulatory timelines and positioning itself as a frontrunner in transparent environmental reporting.

Susanne Martens-Kruck, Technical Marketing Manager Silanes at Evonik’s Smart Effects business line, explains that PROTECTOSIL® BHN is designed as a silane-based hydrophobic impregnation for mineral materials such as concrete, clinker, and ceramic surfaces, while PROTECTOSIL® CIT helps protect reinforced concrete from water ingress and chloride-induced corrosion. These solutions not only deliver technical performance but also help extend structural service life.

“A small investment in PROTECTOSIL® can prolong the lifespan of buildings by decades at less than one percent of total project cost,” adds Nico Freudl, Regional Marketing Manager EMEA for Building Protection. He notes that the newly published EPDs offer valuable data for sustainability-driven construction decisions.

Susanne Pellengahr, Head of Sustainability at Smart Effects, highlights that these declarations support project stakeholders in material selection and certification processes: “The EPDs put Evonik ahead of upcoming industry standards and give customers the clarity they need for environmentally responsible building design.”

By providing access to comprehensive life cycle figures, the declarations equip architects, planners, and construction managers with documentation required for LCA calculations, certification pathways, and sustainable material assessment. The publication underscores Evonik’s long-term commitment to environmentally responsible product development within the building industry.
