Eviden Secures €60 Million Contract to Deliver Finland’s Next-Generation Supercomputer “Roihu”

(IN BRIEF) Eviden, part of the Atos Group, has secured a €60 million contract to deliver “Roihu,” Finland’s new national supercomputer, which will triple the country’s current computing capacity and significantly enhance AI performance. Built on the BullSequana XH3000 platform, Roihu will offer a peak performance of 49 petaflops and support diverse applications, from traditional simulations to advanced AI tasks. The system will also provide scalable resources for education and research, complementing the pan-European LUMI supercomputer. With energy-efficient technologies, Roihu aligns with Finland’s commitment to sustainable and cutting-edge computing.

(PRESS RELEASE) PARIS, 20-Nov-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — Eviden, part of the Atos Group and a leader in advanced computing, has been awarded a contract worth up to €60 million by CSC – IT Center for Science in Finland to develop “Roihu,” the country’s latest national supercomputer. Designed to triple the computational power of Finland’s current systems, “Mahti” and “Puhti,” Roihu will significantly boost AI performance and accelerate scientific and industrial research across multiple fields.

Built on Eviden’s cutting-edge BullSequana XH3000 hybrid platform, Roihu will deliver a theoretical peak performance of up to 49 petaflops and feature GPU capacity over 10 times that of the existing Puhti system. The new supercomputer will support diverse applications, ranging from traditional simulations in fluid dynamics and climate modeling to advanced AI tasks like audio and video analysis.

Roihu is also set to transform educational access to high-performance computing, providing scalable resources for students and researchers at higher education institutions. This focus on education will help train the next generation of experts across various disciplines, strengthening Finland’s scientific and industrial ecosystem.

“Finland has long committed to building a robust national computing environment,” said Pekka Lehtovuori, Director at CSC. “Roihu’s role will complement the pan-European LUMI supercomputer, ensuring that Finnish researchers have competitive resources to meet their needs, from data management to computational grand challenges.”

Bruno Lecointe, VP and Global Head of HPC, AI, and Quantum Computing at Eviden, highlighted the significance of this project: “Roihu is a landmark investment in Finland’s research infrastructure, aimed at advancing large-scale simulations and AI workloads while prioritizing sustainability. It’s an honor to collaborate with CSC in supporting Finland’s leadership in innovative and environmentally conscious computing.”

Equipped with Eviden’s BullSequana DLC technologies for improved energy efficiency, Roihu not only promises cutting-edge computational power but also aligns with Finland’s commitment to sustainable research and development. By bridging national and European supercomputing capabilities, Roihu ensures Finnish researchers remain at the forefront of innovation.
