EPP Group Supports Omnibus Business Simplification to Drive Growth and Reduce Bureaucratic Barriers

(IN BRIEF) The EPP Group has voiced strong support for the upcoming Omnibus business simplification initiative, emphasizing the urgent need for economic growth and job creation in Europe. With a focus on cutting unnecessary bureaucratic obstacles, the group aims to ease the regulatory burden on small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), enabling them to focus on innovation and growth. While critical environmental and climate action reporting will remain, the EPP Group advocates for a simpler, fairer approach to regulations like the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM). The European Commission’s forthcoming Omnibus law package will aim to reduce administrative burdens by 25%, with a specific 35% reduction target for SMEs.

(PRESS RELEASE) BRUSSELS, 25-Feb-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — The EPP Group has expressed strong support for the upcoming “Omnibus” business simplification initiative, calling it a “crucial step” in fostering long-term growth and job creation across Europe. With Europe facing the urgent need for economic revitalization, the EPP Group is determined to drive this initiative forward to ensure a prosperous future for generations to come.

Tomas Tobé, the EPP Group’s Spokesman for the Omnibus simplification package, emphasized the importance of cutting through bureaucratic obstacles to pave the way for economic recovery. “Eliminating unnecessary red tape and simplifying regulations is vital for promoting growth, job creation, and future prosperity,” Tobé stated. He also pointed out that small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), which are the foundation of Europe’s economy, should be free from excessive administrative burdens so they can focus on innovation and development.

The EPP Group is committed to reducing regulatory complexity, while ensuring that critical oversight and accountability remain in place. While reporting obligations for key areas such as environmental safety and climate action remain necessary, the group advocates for removing excessive bureaucracy that hampers progress.

“We must listen to businesses, which are key drivers of employment, and remove unnecessary barriers to help them grow and innovate,” said Dolors Montserrat, EPP Group Vice-President for Economy and Environment. Montserrat further highlighted concerns over the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), noting that measuring CO2 emissions per product is too complex for many SMEs. “While we support CBAM, we want it to be more streamlined and fairer, with practical exemptions for SMEs,” she explained.

The European Commission is set to unveil its first Omnibus law package tomorrow, which will simplify regulations related to due diligence and sustainability reporting. The package aims to reduce administrative burdens across Europe by at least 25%, with a particular focus on cutting burdens for SMEs by 35%.
