(PRESS RELEASE) LONDON, 13-May-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) has granted a €50 million subordinated loan to Garanti BBVA Romania to enhance its capital base and bolster the bank’s lending capacity, with a special focus on investments supporting the green economy. This loan is aimed at strengthening Romania’s banking sector stability and promoting sustainable economic growth through increased lending to climate action and environmental sustainability projects.

Garanti BBVA Romania will use the funds to support local projects aligned with the green economy, allocating an amount equivalent to 170% of the EBRD loan for climate-related investments. This commitment underscores Garanti BBVA’s adherence to environmental standards and its dedication to sustainable lending practices. The funding will also help accelerate Romania’s transition to a low-carbon economy, benefiting both the environment and the broader economy.

The loan is structured in compliance with the Capital Requirements Regulation and Capital Requirements Directive IV, ensuring that Garanti BBVA Romania’s capital structure remains robust while expanding its ability to lend to the real economy. The funding is part of the EBRD’s ongoing efforts to support sustainable development in Romania and further strengthen the country’s financial infrastructure.
