(PRESS RELEASE) MILAN, 26-Mar-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — Webuild Group has secured a major infrastructure contract aimed at enhancing water quality in the Gulf of Naples, reinforcing its ongoing commitment to urban development in Southern Italy. The €111 million project involves the modernization of a wastewater treatment facility in East Naples and has been awarded to Fisia Italimpianti, a subsidiary of Webuild, in partnership with Spain-based Acciona. The initiative is expected to significantly improve wastewater management and strengthen the reliability of the regional water system.

The contract was issued by Invitalia on behalf of the extraordinary commissioner responsible for the project, marking a key milestone in efforts to upgrade Naples’ environmental infrastructure. Through this latest award, Webuild expands its footprint in Southern Italy, bringing the total number of projects it is currently managing in the region to 21, with a combined value exceeding €16 billion. These activities support more than 10,000 jobs and involve thousands of suppliers across the supply chain.

The East Naples treatment plant, originally constructed in the San Giovanni a Teduccio district during the late 1990s, will undergo a comprehensive upgrade using advanced biological treatment technologies. Once completed, the facility will serve approximately 860,000 residents across 14 municipalities, covering both urban and metropolitan areas. The improvements are also expected to contribute to the environmental restoration of the eastern Naples coastline, a key area targeted for broader urban regeneration.

By improving water quality in the Gulf of Naples, the project aims to make sections of the coastline suitable for bathing once again, supporting tourism, boosting local economic activity, and generating employment opportunities. The initiative is therefore positioned not only as an infrastructure upgrade but also as a catalyst for social and economic revitalization.

Matteo Buzzetti, General Manager of Fisia Italimpianti, emphasized the importance of the project, highlighting the company’s extensive experience in water treatment and its ability to deliver high-performance, environmentally sustainable solutions. He noted that the upgraded plant will play a vital role in improving water quality while supporting the redevelopment of an area with significant environmental and economic potential.

The project further strengthens Webuild’s longstanding presence in Naples, where it continues to play a central role in the development of the city’s transport and infrastructure systems. Recent achievements include contracts related to Naples Metro Line 10, as well as the construction and ongoing work on multiple metro stations. The Group has also contributed to major regional projects such as the Naples–Afragola high-speed railway station and continues to be involved in key sections of the Naples–Bari and Salerno–Reggio Calabria high-speed rail lines. These initiatives form part of the broader Trans-European Transport Network Scandinavian–Mediterranean Corridor, which aims to enhance connectivity across Italy and Europe.

The East Naples project also reflects Webuild’s integrated approach to infrastructure delivery, combining global expertise with the specialized capabilities of its subsidiaries. Fisia Italimpianti, with nearly a century of experience in water treatment and desalination, has established itself as a global leader in designing and constructing complex water infrastructure. Its treatment facilities serve over nine million people worldwide, while its desalination plants provide drinking water to more than 20 million individuals, particularly in regions such as the Middle East.

This multidisciplinary approach enables Webuild to manage large-scale, technically demanding projects from initial design through to completion. A recent example includes its involvement in the Riachuelo System in Buenos Aires, one of the largest river restoration initiatives globally.

Recognized by Engineering News-Record as the world’s leading contractor in the water sector by revenue, Webuild continues to build on a legacy that includes hundreds of dams, hydropower facilities, and water infrastructure projects. The East Naples initiative aligns with this track record, allowing the Group to apply international expertise domestically while contributing to Italy’s sustainability goals, particularly in water resource management and urban environmental quality.
