CPB Contractors to Deliver Key Section of Melbourne’s Eastern Freeway Upgrade Connecting to North East Link

(IN BRIEF) CPB Contractors, part of CIMIC Group, will deliver the Eastern Freeway upgrades from Tram Road to Springvale Road as part of the Synergy consortium with BMD Constructions and Arup. The project will create new lanes, improve ramps, add advanced traffic management systems, and enhance active transport with upgraded walking and cycling paths and a pedestrian overpass at Eram Park. Open space revitalisation, including tree planting in Koonung Creek Linear Park, will also be part of the works. Scheduled for completion in 2028, the upgrades will connect into the North East Link and M80 Ring Road and are expected to save motorists up to 11 minutes between Springvale Road and Hoddle Street.

(PRESS RELEASE) MADRID, 11-Aug-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — CPB Contractors, a CIMIC Group company, will take a leading role in a significant transformation of Melbourne’s Eastern Freeway, after being appointed by Major Road Projects Victoria as part of the Synergy consortium. The upgrade, stretching between Tram Road and Springvale Road, is designed to improve traffic flow, cut journey times, and enhance connections across the city’s north-east transport network.

Partnering with BMD Constructions and Arup, CPB Contractors will deliver a package of works aimed at both motorists and active transport users. Once complete, the upgraded section will link directly into the North East Link and the M80 Ring Road in Greensborough, with drivers expected to save up to 11 minutes between Springvale Road and Hoddle Street.

Juan Santamaría, ACS Group Chief Executive Officer and CIMIC Group Executive Chairman, said the project will provide “greater access across Melbourne’s eastern suburbs and better links to key arterial routes, while improving infrastructure for cyclists and pedestrians.”

According to CPB Contractors Managing Director Jason Spears, the project will benefit from the company’s experience on the North East Link, with a focus on safety, sustainability, and innovative construction methods. “By applying the latest digital tools and maintaining close engagement with the Victorian Government and local communities, we aim to minimise disruption while delivering long-term value,” he said.

The works will deliver:

  • Additional freeway lanes and upgraded on/off ramps
  • Revitalised open space with new landscaping and tree planting in Koonung Creek Linear Park
  • Advanced traffic management systems for smoother and safer journeys
  • Improved walking and cycling infrastructure, including a new pedestrian bridge at Eram Park

Targeted for completion in 2028, the Eastern Freeway upgrade will create a faster, safer, and more integrated transport corridor that supports both vehicle and active travel, while providing environmental and social benefits for the surrounding communities.
