CAF and Gamuda Berhad Partner to Deliver State-of-the-Art Trams for New Taipei’s Light Rail Expansion

(IN BRIEF) CAF has signed a framework agreement with Malaysian construction firm Gamuda Berhad to deliver up to 23 Urbos trams for Taiwan’s New Taipei City. The contract, potentially worth €200 million, includes trams for the Xidong and Keelung lines, along with spare parts, a driving simulator, and depot equipment. Building on CAF’s earlier success in Kaohsiung, this project affirms the company’s role in supporting sustainable, innovative rail systems in high-density urban environments. The new vehicles will be over 55 metres long, carry up to 615 passengers, and incorporate advanced features suited to Taiwan’s conditions.

(PRESS RELEASE) BEASAIN, 10-Jun-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — CAF has entered into a framework agreement with leading Malaysian construction company Gamuda Berhad to supply up to 23 Urbos trams for the growing light rail network in New Taipei, Taiwan. This strategic agreement, valued at approximately €200 million when including all options, also encompasses spare parts, depot equipment, and a driving simulator. The trams are destined for the Xidong and Keelung lines, which are operated by the Rapid Transit Systems Department of New Taipei City.

This project marks CAF’s second major milestone in Taiwan following its successful delivery of a catenary-free tram system in Kaohsiung. That earlier project stood out globally for pioneering the use of on-board energy storage technology, enabling trams to recharge while stationary at stops, eliminating the need for overhead power lines.

The new contract once again positions CAF as a trusted mobility partner for Taiwan’s urban development. Led by Gamuda Berhad, the integrated project further reflects the technical strength and joint execution capability of both companies. The Taiwanese authorities’ decision underscores their confidence in CAF and Gamuda to deliver complex, high-quality transport solutions that meet the evolving needs of urban transit systems.

New Taipei City, the largest municipality in Taiwan with nearly 4 million residents, is expanding its transport infrastructure to accommodate increased demand. The Xizhi-Donghu (Xidong) line will stretch roughly six kilometres as a fully elevated route, including six stations and a central depot. This initiative forms part of a larger metro area development plan to bolster mobility and sustainability.

CAF will provide Urbos trams made up of nine aluminium modules, each exceeding 55 metres in length. The vehicles will boast a maximum capacity of 615 passengers and offer full accessibility for individuals with reduced mobility. They will also feature cutting-edge systems tailored to New Taipei’s high-density urban layout and specific climatic conditions.

This new agreement strengthens CAF’s global footprint in urban transit, adding New Taipei to an extensive list of cities operating CAF units, including Sydney, Oslo, Houston, Lisbon, and Budapest. It also highlights the company’s commitment to delivering smart, sustainable, and accessible mobility solutions to some of the world’s fastest-growing cities.
