Bus passengers in Finland will have a chance to reduce the carbon footprint of their bus trips with new Green Travel service

(PRESS RELEASE) ESPOO, 15-May-2019 — /EuropaWire/ — Bus operator Savonlinja is partnering with Neste to introduce lower-emission traveling solution to its customers. Starting from mid-May 2019, the bus service will include a Green Travel surcharge on the normal bus ticket price, which will be up to the customer to decide on its exact amount.

Savonlinja will reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by fueling its buses with Neste MY Renewable Diesel™ by using the money the company will collect from the Green Travel service. Neste MY Renewable Diesel™ is produced entirely from waste and residues.

Furthermore, Savonlinja, as part of the cooperation, will double the amount of money its customers pay for Green Travel service and will use these funds to cut down greenhouse gas emissions by refueling with Neste MY Renewable Diesel.

Under this kind of arrangement, which is the first of its kind in Finland, the customers will contribute to the reduction of their bus ride’s greenhouse gas emissions by an average of 90% compared to fossil diesel.

All Savonlinja’s long-distance passengers will be offered the new Green Travel service. It can be purchased for regular long-distance tickets via the mobile application “Linjalla” and at the Savonlinja online store. Customers will be given the option to decide on the price of the Green Travel themselves as the minimum amount for the service is set to one euro. The low-emission option will also be available to the customers for charter bus services.

Commenting on the Savonlinja / Neste partnership, Tuomas Kulola, Head of Sales, Marketing & Services at Neste, said:

“Climate change does not wait and solutions are needed right here and now. The key to fighting climate change is introducing innovations of all sizes to help bring about a more sustainable future. Developed in collaboration with Savonlinja, Green Travel is a good example of how important partnerships are to creating effective solutions. We are very proud to collaborate with Savonlinja on offering consumers the opportunity to reduce the carbon footprint of their bus trips.”

Harri Leskinen, Savonlinja’s Chief Business Officer, comments:

“Customers have told us that they would like to have more climate and environmentally friendly transport options. Green Travel is the answer to this. Our long-term goal is to be able to use only renewable fuel in our entire fleet.”

Produced entirely out of waste and residues, Neste MY Renewable Diesel reduces vehicle emissions. The MY Renewable Diesel has been available on the market in Finland since 2017 as its performance matches the best fossil-based diesels on the market. According to Neste, approximately one-fifth of consumers in Finland already use Neste MY Renewable Diesel when it is available at their local gas station. Nearly 50 filling stations throughout Finland are currently offering the Neste MY Renewable Diesel. The fuel can be used without any modifications to the vehicle’s engine and is compatible with all diesel engines.
