Borealis Unveils Advanced rLLDPE Solution for Sustainable Packaging

(IN BRIEF) Borealis, in partnership with Ecoplast, has introduced Borcycle™ M CWT120CL, an advanced recycled LLDPE grade designed for non-food flexible packaging. With an 85% post-consumer recyclate content blended with 15% LLDPE booster, this innovative material is engineered for blown film applications, including stretch films and hoods, as well as films for agricultural, industrial, and protective uses. The grade achieves exceptional stretchability, low gel content, and a balanced toughness-stiffness profile, enabling manufacturers to meet strict EU packaging standards while reducing carbon footprints. This launch underscores Borealis’ commitment to advancing circularity and sustainable living, with samples set to be showcased at PRSE Amsterdam.

(PRESS RELEASE) VIENNA, 12-Mar-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — In a notable stride toward circularity in flexible packaging, Borealis has launched Borcycle™ M CWT120CL, an innovative recycled linear low-density polyethylene (rLLDPE) grade. This breakthrough material, developed in collaboration with Ecoplast—a subsidiary of the Borealis Group—boasts an impressive composition of 85% post-consumer recyclate blended with 15% LLDPE booster, making it particularly suited for non-food flexible packaging applications.

Industry experts have highlighted the material’s significant technical achievement, which reflects Borealis’ EverMinds™ commitment to advancing sustainable, high-performance solutions through mechanical recycling technology. The new grade is engineered for blown film applications across primary, secondary, and tertiary packaging. Its versatile performance is tailored for a range of uses including stretch films, stretch hoods, and films for agricultural, industrial, and protective purposes. These applications benefit from the material’s exceptional stretchability, low gel content, and a finely tuned toughness-stiffness balance, ensuring that packaging manufacturers can meet the stringent requirements of the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) without sacrificing performance.

Since the project’s inception in late 2022, over two years of intensive development have culminated in a material that not only supports a significant reduction in the carbon footprint of final products but also empowers customers to achieve their sustainability targets. Peter Voortmans, Commercial Director Consumer Products Flexibles at Borealis, commented on the launch:

“With its impressive 85% post-consumer recyclate content, this new rLLDPE grade represents a major step on the path to a circular economy for plastics. Borcycle™ M CWT120CL will help our customers meet their sustainability targets while maintaining the high performance standards required for demanding flexible packaging applications—just one of the ways we’re re-inventing essentials for sustainable living.”

Samples of Borcycle™ M CWT120CL will be showcased at PRSE Amsterdam on 1–2 April 2025, at Stand K80 in Hall 5, offering stakeholders an opportunity to experience firsthand the potential of this cutting-edge solution.
