Borealis and Aspiravi Forge Partnership for 120 GWh Annual Supply of Renewable Energy, Advancing Decarbonization Efforts in Belgium

(IN BRIEF) Borealis has signed a long-term power purchase agreement with Aspiravi to secure 120 GWh of renewable energy annually from Belgian wind farms. This partnership will significantly reduce Borealis’ Scope 2 emissions and supports the company’s goal of sourcing 100% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2030. The agreement strengthens local economic growth and contributes to both Borealis’ and Belgium’s sustainability ambitions.

(PRESS RELEASE) VIENNA/HARELBEKE, 21-Jan-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Borealis, a leading provider of innovative and sustainable polyolefin solutions, has entered into a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA) with Aspiravi, one of Belgium’s top renewable energy producers. Under the agreement, Aspiravi will supply Borealis with 120 GWh of renewable energy per year, sourced from 20 onshore wind turbines across eight wind farms in Belgium, beginning in 2026. This renewable energy will power Borealis’ operations in Belgium, reducing its Scope 2 emissions by an estimated 54,100 metric tons of CO2 annually.

Wolfram Krenn, Executive Vice President of Base Chemicals and Operations at Borealis, expressed the company’s commitment to sustainability: “We are thrilled to partner with Aspiravi to ensure a reliable, local, and sustainable energy supply for our operations. By focusing on sourcing energy within Belgium, we are not only supporting sustainable development but also contributing to local economic growth. This agreement brings us closer to our goal of sourcing 100% of our electricity from renewable sources by 2030 and demonstrates our dedication to reinventing essential products for a more sustainable future.”

Bernard Steverlynck, CEO of Aspiravi Onshore, highlighted the significance of the partnership: “Aspiravi is proud to collaborate with Borealis in the transition to a low-carbon economy through this long-term agreement. As a pioneer in renewable energy in Belgium, we are excited to support Borealis in achieving its decarbonization goals and sustainability objectives. The energy for this project is entirely sourced and used within Belgium, making this partnership a strong contribution to both the Belgian energy sector and the climate goals of both Borealis and Belgium.”

This partnership marks a significant step in Borealis’ ongoing efforts to integrate sustainable energy solutions into its operations and is in line with its broader environmental and climate strategies.
