(PRESS RELEASE) FARNBOROUGH, 14-Sep-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — BAE Systems has been awarded a £60 million contract by the Ministry of Defence to enhance the Royal Navy’s Sting Ray lightweight torpedo. The four-year project will focus on upgrading the torpedo’s capabilities, incorporating advanced technology and expanding its deployment options to address modern threats in anti-submarine warfare.

The upgrade, which includes prototype development and in-water trials, will support over 80 engineering jobs at BAE’s Maritime Services division in Portsmouth and around 20 specialist manufacturing roles in Hillend, Fife. Additionally, the contract will drive investment in small and medium-sized UK suppliers.

BAE Systems’ Managing Director of Maritime Services, Scott Jamieson, highlighted the significance of this project in strengthening the UK’s underwater defence strategy. Commodore Steve Bolton of the Royal Navy praised the upgrade as a crucial step in making the Sting Ray the leading anti-submarine weapon. This development marks a significant advancement in the UK’s defence capabilities for decades to come.
