Alstom Revolutionizes High-Speed Rail in Türkiye with First-Ever ROCS Installation

(IN BRIEF) Alstom has secured a pivotal agreement with RESA Yapi Elektromekanik A.S. to supply the Rigid Overhead Catenary System (ROCS) for a segment of Türkiye’s new high-speed railway between Halkali and Kapikule, part of the TEN-T network. This innovative project, designed to ease transport pressure in the Istanbul region by boosting passenger capacity by 80% and freight capacity by 45%, will be executed by Alstom’s Valmadrera site in Lecco, with additional support from Alstom Algeria for catenary installation design. The contract includes the supply of a cutting-edge aerial feeding system along a 14 km tunnel section that passes beneath residential areas and Lake Küçükçekmece, marking the first use of a ROCS on a high-speed line in Türkiye. Edoardo Gino, Alstom Valmadrera Site Director, reiterated the company’s commitment to innovation and modernization in rail infrastructure, aiming to contribute significantly to Europe’s transport integration. Alstom’s ROCS system offers efficiency, ease of installation, low maintenance, and high fire resistance through its advanced design featuring an aluminum conductor and copper contact wire. This project builds on over a century of expertise at the Valmadrera facility, which has long been a leader in the production of electrification components for rail, metro, and tram networks worldwide.

(PRESS RELEASE) SAINT-OUEN-SUR-SEINE, 9-Apr-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Alstom, a global leader in smart and sustainable mobility, has signed a landmark agreement with RESA Yapi Elektromekanik A.S. to design and supply the components for the Rigid Overhead Catenary System (ROCS) on a crucial section of Türkiye’s new high-speed railway line linking Halkali and Kapikule. This project, part of the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T), comprises 153 km of an integrated and sustainable transport corridor that is essential for boosting socio-economic development throughout the European Union. Upon its completion, the new line is expected to alleviate pressure on local transport networks by facilitating an 80% increase in passenger volumes and a 45% rise in freight capacity, thereby enhancing connectivity in the Istanbul region.

The responsibility for the design, production, and supply of the ROCS components falls to Alstom’s site in Valmadrera (Lecco), while Alstom Algeria will contribute to the catenary installation design. In addition to supplying the ROCS, Alstom will also provide the aerial feeding system along the twin-tunnel route—a double-track tunnel stretching approximately 7 km per tunnel (14 km in total) with an 8.3-meter diameter—which will traverse under residential areas and Lake Küçükçekmece. This project is the first application of a Rigid Overhead Catenary System on a high-speed line in Türkiye.

Edoardo Gino, Site Director at Alstom Valmadrera, expressed pride in this achievement: “We are proud to supply the first Rigid Overhead Catenary System for Türkiye’s new high-speed line. This contract demonstrates not only the excellence and innovative approach of our site but also reaffirms our commitment to modernising rail infrastructure on a global scale, further bridging Europe with the rest of the world.”

Alstom’s ROCS is engineered to be both efficient and cost-effective, particularly well-suited for confined spaces and tunnel retrofits. It features an aluminum conductor profile coupled with a copper contact wire that simplifies installation and minimizes maintenance. The compact system also enhances fire resistance and integrates seamlessly with existing networks, accommodating various supply voltages to offer a versatile solution for a broad range of electrification needs.

For over a century, the Valmadrera site in Lecco has been at the forefront of producing essential materials for the electrification of major railway, metro, and tram networks, supplying products not only across Italy but globally. The facility manufactures catenaries and related electrification components, including clamps for substations, power distribution line components, rigid catenaries for aerial systems, third rails for metro lines, as well as APS (ground dynamic feeding systems) for tramways and electrical feeders for overhead cranes.

Alstom Alstom commits to contribute to a low carbon future by developing and promoting innovative and sustainable transportation solutions that people enjoy riding. From high-speed trains, metros, monorails, trams, to turnkey systems, services, infrastructure, signalling and digital mobility, Alstom offers its diverse customers the broadest portfolio in the industry. With its presence in 64 countries and a talent base of over 84,700 people from 184 nationalities, the company focuses its design, innovation, and project management skills to where mobility solutions are needed most. Listed in France, Alstom generated revenues of €17.6 billion for the fiscal year ending on 31 March 2024.
