AFRY Partners in Revamping Sweden’s Historic Untra Hydropower Plant

(IN BRIEF) AFRY is collaborating with Fortum to modernize the Untra hydropower plant in Sweden, which has been in operation for over 100 years. The project involves replacing three of the plant’s five generators, which will increase its output from 42 to 48 MW and annual production from 270 to 300 GWh. AFRY will handle the electrical and control systems for the new units. The upgrades include transitioning to a vertical generator design and incorporating advanced control technology. The project, which aims to extend the plant’s operational life by another century, is expected to be completed by the end of 2030.

(PRESS RELEASE) SOLNA, 6-Sep-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — In a landmark development for sustainable energy, AFRY is playing a pivotal role in the modernization of Fortum’s century-old Untra hydropower plant. The project, which involves replacing three of the facility’s five generators, aims to elevate the plant’s output from 42 to 48 MW and boost annual production from 270 to 300 GWh.

Untra, a cornerstone of Fortum’s hydropower operations and one of Sweden’s oldest plants, is set to undergo significant upgrades following approval from the Swedish Land and Environment Court in 2021. The renovation will see the installation of state-of-the-art generators, promising enhanced efficiency and longevity.

AFRY, renowned for its expertise in electrical and control systems, has been tasked with overseeing the electrical and control contracts for the project. This includes the integration of advanced relay protection, excitation equipment, and the adaptation of both new and existing systems to the updated control infrastructure.

Miriam Mesquine, BU Manager Hydro Sweden at AFRY, expressed enthusiasm about the project: “Our involvement in this modernization is a testament to AFRY’s commitment to advancing renewable energy solutions. Enhancing the capacity and efficiency of existing power plants is crucial for increasing Sweden’s electricity production and supporting local communities.”

The renovation will feature a transition from the current horizontal shaft and generator setup to a more efficient vertical design. This upgrade, coupled with new technology and improved waterways, is expected to sustain the plant’s production of renewable, carbon-free electricity for another century.

A new machine room, highlighted by a modern glass superstructure connecting the intake house and existing machine room, will house the new equipment. This upgrade promises not only increased operational efficiency but also improved maintenance protocols.

The project is set to continue through to the end of 2030, with the final unit’s commissioning marking the completion of this ambitious endeavor.
