University of Dundee won the Gold award in 2017 Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF)

Dundee, Scotland, 22-Jun-2017 — /EuropaWire/ — The University of Dundee has been given a Gold award – the highest possible rating – in the 2017 Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF).

The TEF was introduced by the UK Government to recognise and reward excellent learning and teaching.

The ranking places Dundee among an elite group of British universities licensed to use the TEF Gold Award for the next three years.

“The award of TEF Gold is an excellent result which highlights the quality of learning, teaching and the student experience that we offer at Dundee,” said Professor Karl Leydecker, Vice-Principal (Learning & Teaching), who co-ordinated the University’s TEF submission.

“The TEF offers solid evidence to prospective and current students of the quality of teaching and student support they can expect at university, which at Dundee is of gold standard. This in turn ensures that our students go on to enjoy high levels of employment after they graduate.

“We strive to ensure that students from all backgrounds are given the opportunities to succeed, with learning and teaching that is enriched by the world class research at the University. Much of our work in this is underpinned by our unique partnership with our students, who have strong representation at every level of the University and have played a key role in enhancing learning, teaching and the wider student experience. Our TEF submission and award reflect the strength of that partnership.

In their statement of findings, the TEF panel said of Dundee, `students from all backgrounds achieve outstanding outcomes.’

The TEF panel said their awarding of Gold to Dundee reflected, in particular, evidence of:

• a comprehensive range of opportunities for students to develop knowledge, skills and understanding which are most highly valued by employers, supported by career planning that is consistently embedded within programmes
• course design and assessment practices that provide scope for optimum levels of stretch and for consistently high levels of engagement and commitment to learning and study from students
• optimum levels of student engagement in initiatives enhancing learning, teaching and the support environment
• a well established University-wide culture that facilitates, recognises and rewards excellence in learning and teaching

Indre Urbanaviciute, President of Dundee University Students’ Association, said, “This is a hugely impressive result for the University but at the same time it is not a surprise. We know the community and the experience here at Dundee is as good as you will find anywhere and the TEF Gold is further recognition of that.

“The University has managed to balance intensive and leading research with providing the best possible education and support for students to attain their aspirations and potential, as well as providing a dynamic and enriching student experience.“

Dundee has been named Scottish University of the Year by The Times & Sunday Times Good University Guide for the past two years, which stated, “Dundee proves it is possible to be both an outstanding teaching university and one at the cutting edge in research work.”

The University is also in the top ten of the UK’s National Student Survey and is one of Times Higher Education’s world top 200 universities.
