RWE Secures Long-Term Power Licence for Denmark’s Largest Offshore Wind Project

RWE Secures Long-Term Power Licence for Denmark’s Largest Offshore Wind Project

(IN BRIEF) RWE has secured a 30-year electricity production licence for the Thor offshore wind farm, marking a significant milestone for Denmark’s largest offshore wind project. With an installed capacity of 1.1 gigawatts, Thor is expected to supply renewable electricity to the equivalent of more than one million Danish homes when it becomes operational in 2027. Construction is advancing as planned, following the installation of turbine foundations and an offshore substation, with turbine installation scheduled to begin this spring from the Port of Esbjerg. Developed jointly with Norges Bank Investment Management, the project will contribute to Denmark’s climate goals and long-term energy security.

(PRESS RELEASE) COPENHAGEN, 26-Jan-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — RWE has reached a major milestone in the development of Denmark’s largest offshore wind project after the Danish Energy Agency granted a 30-year electricity production licence for the Thor offshore wind farm. The approval clears a critical regulatory step for the project, which is set to deliver large-scale renewable power to Denmark when it becomes fully operational in 2027.

With a total installed capacity of 1.1 gigawatts, Thor offshore wind farm is expected to generate enough clean electricity to supply the equivalent of more than one million Danish households. The project is positioned as a key contributor to Denmark’s national climate targets while also strengthening long-term energy security at both national and European levels.

Construction of the wind farm continues to progress in line with the project schedule. During the past year, the offshore substation and all foundations for the 72 wind turbines were successfully installed approximately 22 kilometres off the west coast of Jutland. The next construction phase is scheduled to begin this spring, with turbine installation set to commence from the Port of Esbjerg, Denmark.

Thor offshore wind farm is being developed as a joint venture between RWE, which holds a 51 percent ownership stake, and Norges Bank Investment Management, which owns the remaining 49 percent. RWE is responsible for managing construction activities and will oversee operations throughout the full lifecycle of the offshore wind farm, ensuring long-term performance and reliability.

Once completed, Thor is expected to play a central role in scaling Denmark’s offshore wind capacity, reinforcing the country’s leadership in renewable energy development while delivering substantial clean power generation to the Danish grid.
