The innovation aims to reduce return rates and improve customer satisfaction, building on the success of Zalando’s earlier technology. Surveys show that customers are increasingly frustrated with traditional fitting rooms, and this new feature addresses those concerns by offering a 360º view and realistic fit representation.

(PRESS RELEASE) BERLIN, 17-Oct-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — Zalando is set to transform the online shopping experience by integrating its cutting-edge body measurement technology into its virtual fitting rooms, enabling customers to create highly accurate 3D avatars based on their unique body measurements. This innovative feature, launching across 14 European markets, allows shoppers to virtually try on a curated selection of Levi’s apparel for both men and women, including t-shirts, jackets, and hoodies.

Building on the success of its 2023 body measurement technology, Zalando’s enhanced virtual fitting room offers a more personalized and realistic online shopping journey. This pilot initiative aims to address common consumer frustrations with traditional changing rooms, such as inadequate size guides and high return rates. Over 80,000 customers have already utilized Zalando’s virtual fitting room since its initial launch in 2022, benefiting from a better understanding of garment fit and contributing to a significant reduction in size-related returns.

Pelin Anlu Bedirhanoglu, Director of Product Size and Fit at Zalando, highlighted the advancements made: “In the early iterations of our virtual fitting room, 3D avatars were generated using statistical models based on height, weight, and gender. However, we recognize that every individual’s body is unique. By incorporating our body measurement technology, customers can now create avatars that truly reflect their individual body shapes. This enhancement has already led to a 40% decrease in return rates during our testing phase, indicating strong potential to improve both customer satisfaction and partner relationships.”

A recent survey conducted by Zalando among European shoppers revealed growing dissatisfaction with traditional fitting rooms, poor size accuracy, and the hassle of returns. Approximately 36% of adults indicated that a negative fitting or shopping experience would deter them from making a purchase. Key issues identified include limited space in changing rooms (41.1%), concerns about garment fit (23.6%), and feeling rushed during the shopping process (23.1%).

With the launch of the enhanced virtual fitting room, Zalando empowers customers to visualize how different sizes and styles will look on their bodies using their smartphones. The feature offers a 360º view and the ability to zoom in and out, providing a comprehensive and comfortable shopping experience from the convenience of home.
