Neste’s Renewable Diesel Powers Verne Data Centers’ Backup Generators, Supporting a Sustainable Future

Neste’s Renewable Diesel Powers Verne Data Centers’ Backup Generators, Supporting a Sustainable Future

(IN BRIEF) Neste has partnered with Verne, a leading data center provider in Finland, to power Verne’s backup generators with Neste MY Renewable Diesel™, a fuel made from 100% renewable raw materials like animal fat and used cooking oil. By switching from fossil diesel to Neste’s renewable diesel, Verne aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from its backup generators by up to 90%. The renewable diesel is well-suited for Finland’s cold climate, operating efficiently in temperatures as low as -32°C. The partnership highlights Neste’s commitment to supporting sustainability initiatives and Verne’s efforts to minimize the environmental impact of its data center operations.

(PRESS RELEASE) ESPOO, 16-Oct-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — In a significant step towards sustainability, Neste has partnered with Verne, a leading provider of sustainable data center solutions in Finland, to power Verne’s backup generators with Neste MY Renewable Diesel™. The renewable fuel will be used at Verne’s data centers in Helsinki, Pori, and Tampere, helping the company transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources. This move will reduce the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from Verne’s backup generators by up to 90% over the life cycle of the fuel compared to fossil diesel.

Neste MY Renewable Diesel, made from 100% renewable raw materials like animal fats and used cooking oil, provides an eco-friendly alternative to conventional diesel. Its chemical similarity to fossil diesel allows Verne to seamlessly switch without the need for modifications to their existing generator systems. The renewable diesel is also well-suited for Finland’s harsh winters, with the ability to be stored in temperatures as low as -32°C and maintain its reliability during long storage periods, ensuring consistent backup power during outages.

Kim Gunnelius, Head of Finland at Verne, highlighted the importance of the switch: “Our mission is to minimize the environmental impact of our data center services. By adopting Neste’s renewable diesel, we are taking a significant step toward eliminating fossil fuels from our operations in Finland. While backup generators are rarely needed due to Finland’s highly reliable grid, their regular testing makes it crucial to minimize environmental impact.”

Joni Pihlström, Vice President of Marketing & Services at Neste, praised the collaboration, stating: “Working together with Verne to support their sustainability goals is a powerful example of how renewable fuels can easily replace fossil diesel without sacrificing performance or reliability. We’re proud to play a role in helping the data center industry reduce emissions and combat climate change.”

This partnership not only underscores the importance of collaboration in achieving sustainability goals but also demonstrates the effectiveness of renewable fuels in high-performance, mission-critical environments like data centers.
