Power2X and Advario Launch Europe’s Largest e-SAF Hub in Port of Rotterdam to Support Aviation Decarbonization Goals

Power2X and Advario Launch Europe’s Largest e-SAF Hub in Port of Rotterdam to Support Aviation Decarbonization Goals

(IN BRIEF) Power2X and Advario have teamed up to create one of the world’s largest hubs for sustainable aviation fuel (e-SAF) in the Port of Rotterdam. The facility, with a production capacity of over 250,000 tonnes of e-SAF per year, will fuel around 7,000 flights annually. The project, which includes a storage facility and uses green hydrogen and imported green methanol, is strategically located to serve European airports and supports the EU’s aviation decarbonization goals. Once operational, it will contribute 40% of Europe’s required e-SAF volume, helping to cut CO2 emissions in aviation.

(PRESS RELEASE) ROTTERDAM, 16-Oct-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — Power2X and Advario have joined forces to establish a large-scale production and storage hub for sustainable aviation fuel (e-SAF) and ultra-low carbon synthetic fuels in the Port of Rotterdam. This facility will be the largest e-SAF plant to date, with an annual production capacity of over 250,000 tonnes of e-SAF, enough to fuel approximately 7,000 flights between Amsterdam and New York each year.

The plant will use green methanol, sourced from biogenic carbon and green hydrogen, imported from regions rich in renewable energy, along with locally produced green hydrogen. Advario will handle the development of a cutting-edge storage facility with a capacity of 230,000 cubic meters, supported by marine and rail access to ensure a steady supply chain for green molecules.

The strategic location in Rotterdam provides direct access to European airports like Amsterdam Schiphol, positioning the hub as a key distribution center for e-SAF and e-fuels in Europe. This project plays a significant role in supporting Europe’s ReFuelEU Aviation Regulation, which mandates increased use of SAF from 2030. Once operational, the hub is expected to provide 40% of Europe’s e-SAF requirements.

Occo Roelofsen, CEO of Power2X, expressed that the project highlights their dedication to next-generation energy infrastructure and advancing the energy transition. Bas Verkooijen, CEO of Advario, emphasized the importance of the partnership in driving the energy transition through essential infrastructure development. Boudewijn Siemons, CEO of the Port of Rotterdam Authority, also stressed the significance of this project in helping Europe meet its renewable aviation fuel goals.

This facility marks a crucial step in Europe’s journey toward decarbonization by offering a sustainable and scalable solution for the aviation sector.
