Henkel and Panverta Revolutionize Sustainable Packaging with Enhanced Oxygen Barrier Technology

(IN BRIEF) Henkel Adhesive Technologies and Panverta CPP have collaborated to create sustainable packaging solutions for dry foods, improving oxygen barrier performance and reducing the number of packaging layers. By enhancing the oxygen barrier of metallized cast polypropylene (CPP) and aluminum oxide (AIOx) films, they have developed mono-material polypropylene (PP) packaging that replaces multi-layer packaging. This innovation supports the circular economy by simplifying recycling and reducing material use while maintaining the integrity of food packaging.

(PRESS RELEASE) DÜSSELDORF, 30-Sep-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — Henkel Adhesive Technologies and Indonesia’s Panverta CPP have teamed up to develop a sustainable solution for dry food packaging by improving the oxygen barrier properties of packaging films. By reducing the number of layers in packaging, the collaboration is aimed at cutting down waste while maintaining high-quality food protection. Traditionally, packaging for products like flour, rice, and pasta consists of multiple layers to guard against air, moisture, and light, but these multi-layered materials are often difficult to recycle.

The joint innovation between Henkel and Panverta focuses on optimizing metallized cast polypropylene (CPP) and aluminum oxide-coated (AIOx) films, achieving oxygen barrier performance of less than 0.5 cc/m² per day and 8 cc/m² per day respectively. This marks a significant move towards mono-material polypropylene packaging, which is easier to recycle.

Panverta Sales Manager Marcus Hengky emphasized the value of Henkel’s support, noting how the partnership has enhanced Panverta’s product range to attract brand owners looking for efficient, sustainable packaging options.

Henkel’s recyclable Loctite Liofol oxygen barrier coating plays a key role in this partnership, enabling mono-material packaging designs without sacrificing the essential oxygen barrier needed to preserve food. This coating is certified recyclable, improves material efficiency, and meets recycling protocols, ensuring a reduced environmental impact.

At Tokyo Pack 2024, visitors can view the collaboration’s results, including sample packaging that demonstrates the effectiveness of the oxygen barrier properties.
