Zalando Introduces Advanced Robotics Solution to Overcome Shoebox Automation Challenges in Fashion Logistics

(IN BRIEF) Zalando is expanding its logistics automation strategy by deploying up to 50 AI-powered robots from Nomagic across its European fulfilment network. The initiative introduces a new solution for handling shoeboxes, a traditionally difficult task for automation, using advanced computer vision and specialized gripping technology. Following a successful pilot phase, the rollout aims to improve efficiency, accuracy, and scalability while supporting employees by automating repetitive tasks. The collaboration reflects Zalando’s broader commitment to leveraging AI-driven innovation to enhance its logistics infrastructure and customer experience across Europe.

(PRESS RELEASE) BERLIN, 19-Mar-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — Zalando is accelerating the transformation of its logistics operations with the planned deployment of up to 50 AI-powered robots developed in collaboration with Nomagic across its European fulfilment network. The initiative not only expands automation capabilities but also introduces an industry-first solution for one of the most complex challenges in fashion logistics: the automated handling of shoeboxes.

The robots, internally named “Richard,” are designed to perform item-level picking, scanning, and integration into automated sorting systems. Powered by Nomagic’s advanced artificial intelligence and computer vision technology, the systems can identify different materials, shapes, and orientations in real time, enabling them to adjust their grip dynamically. This adaptability is essential for managing Zalando’s diverse and rapidly changing inventory of fashion and lifestyle products, ensuring accurate and efficient order processing.

Marcus Daute, Vice President of Logistics Network at Zalando, explained that the initial testing phase demonstrated a strong fit between Nomagic’s robotics and Zalando’s operational requirements. Following the successful deployment of the first ten units, the company is now expanding the rollout. He emphasized that automation is being implemented to complement employees by taking over repetitive tasks, allowing teams to focus on more complex activities while maintaining high operational standards.

A key breakthrough in the collaboration is the development of the Shoebox Picker, addressing a long-standing automation challenge. Shoeboxes, with their detachable lids, have traditionally been difficult for robotic systems to handle without disruption. The new solution combines AI-driven computer vision with specialized grippers that secure the box from multiple sides, ensuring stability during handling. The system can detect the orientation of each item and adapt its picking method accordingly, significantly improving reliability.

Kacper Nowicki, CEO and Co-Founder of Nomagic, highlighted the importance of combining intelligent software with purpose-built hardware to solve real-world operational challenges. He noted that the partnership with Zalando has enabled the development of a solution that turns a previously complex process into a streamlined and scalable operation.

Following a pilot phase that achieved up to 100,000 picks per day, Zalando is now rolling out the technology across its European logistics network. Initial deployments are already active in Germany and Italy, with further expansion planned for key fulfilment centres in the Netherlands, Sweden, France, and a new facility in Giessen, Germany.
