Wood to Lead Definitive Feasibility Study for Mongolia’s Khalzan Buregtei REE Project

(IN BRIEF) Wood has been selected by MNREC to lead the full feasibility study for the Khalzan Buregtei rare earth elements project, following a 2024 pre-feasibility review. The scope includes detailed design of the concentrator and refinery process plants. The deposit is poised to supply heavy REEs—most notably dysprosium—critical for high-technology and green-energy sectors. Alan Langridge of Wood emphasized the project’s role in bolstering global REE availability and Mongolia’s emerging mineral sector. MNREC CEO Tsolmon Adiya praised Wood’s technical and environmental expertise and anticipates continued partnership as the project progresses.

(PRESS RELEASE) ABERDEEN, 3-Jul-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Wood has been appointed by the Mongolian National Rare Earth Corporation (MNREC) to spearhead the definitive feasibility study for the Khalzan Buregtei rare earth elements (REE) project in Mongolia. Building on the successful completion of a pre-feasibility assessment in 2024, Wood will serve as lead consultant for the overall feasibility study, encompassing design and evaluation of both the concentrator and refinery process plants.

The Khalzan Buregtei deposit is set to become one of the world’s scarce sources of heavy rare earth elements—particularly dysprosium, a metal essential for advanced manufacturing and renewable-energy applications. As global demand for these strategic materials intensifies, this project represents a key milestone in establishing more resilient and ethically sourced supply chains.

“Rare earth elements are indispensable for modern technologies and underpin the global transition to clean energy,” said Alan Langridge, Senior Vice President for Minerals and Metals at Wood. “Our role in delivering the Khalzan Buregtei project will make a meaningful contribution to global REE supplies. Moreover, Mongolia stands poised to become a leading mineral hub over the next decades, and this contract reinforces Wood’s commitment to supporting its local workforce and economic growth.”

Tsolmon Adiya, CEO of MNREC, added: “Wood’s expertise in resource evaluation, processing technology selection, and environmental impact assessment has been invaluable. We look forward to deepening our collaboration as we advance this groundbreaking project into its next phase.”
