WinGD to Power Trafigura’s New Ammonia-Fuelled Gas Carriers with X-DF-A Engines

WinGD to Power Trafigura’s New Ammonia-Fuelled Gas Carriers with X-DF-A Engines

(IN BRIEF) WinGD will provide four six-cylinder 6X52DF-A ammonia-fuelled engines—each with high-pressure SCR—to power 45,000 m³ medium gas carriers being built by HD Hyundai Mipo for Trafigura. The order highlights ammonia’s growing role in decarbonizing shipping. X-DF-A engines have demonstrated full-load operation with just 5 percent pilot fuel and diesel-equivalent thermal efficiency, while achieving ultra-low NOₓ, <10 ppm ammonia slip, and <3 ppm N₂O emissions. Engine deliveries are due from early 2027 to early 2028, building on initial X-DF-A handovers planned for mid-2025.

(PRESS RELEASE) WINTERTHUR, 13-Jun-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — WinGD has been selected to supply its pioneering X-DF-A ammonia-fuelled engine designs for four new 45,000 m³ medium gas carriers (MGCs) being built by HD Hyundai Mipo for Trafigura. Each vessel will be driven by a six-cylinder, 52-bore 6X52DF-A main engine featuring high-pressure selective catalytic reduction, marking another stride in the industry’s shift toward ammonia as a clean marine energy carrier.

Trafigura’s order underscores the rapid expansion of global ammonia-shipping capacity. WinGD’s X-DF-A technology—demonstrated on test engines to achieve full-load operation with only 5 percent pilot fuel and matching diesel-engine thermal efficiency—delivers dramatically reduced emissions: NOₓ is cut substantially, ammonia slip falls below 10 ppm, and N₂O levels stay under 3 ppm. With initial X-DF-A deliveries slated for mid-2025, WinGD’s accumulated construction and commissioning expertise will inform these engines’ production.

“Our proven performance metrics and development track record made X-DF-A the clear choice for Trafigura’s ammonia-fired vessels,” said Benny Hilström, WinGD’s VP of Market Development. “As we move toward the first engine handovers next year, our team is fully prepared to support HD Hyundai Mipo and Trafigura with advanced, zero-carbon propulsion solutions.”

The four 6X52DF-A engines are scheduled for delivery between early 2027 and early 2028, further solidifying WinGD’s leadership in ammonia-capable marine propulsion.
