Voith and Mehrer Compression Forge Partnership to Drive Hydrogen Compression Innovation for Sustainable Energy

(IN BRIEF) Voith and Mehrer Compression GmbH have entered a strategic partnership to develop hydrogen compression technology, combining Voith’s expertise in large-scale manufacturing with Mehrer’s long-standing specialization in oil-free compressors. The partnership will focus on creating efficient, high-pressure hydrogen compressors for various applications, such as pipeline and fueling station infrastructure, aimed at supporting renewable energy initiatives and reducing CO2 emissions. This collaboration is part of Voith’s broader commitment to sustainable industry solutions.

(PRESS RELEASE) HEIDENHEIM, 6-Nov-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — Voith and Mehrer Compression GmbH have launched a strategic partnership aimed at advancing hydrogen compression technology, with a shared commitment to sustainable innovation. Officially announced at Voith’s Crailsheim site, this collaboration brings together Voith’s extensive expertise in large-scale, industrial manufacturing for the oil and gas sectors and Mehrer’s 130-year legacy in oil-free compression technology. Together, they intend to develop, produce, and market hydrogen compressors designed to support the transition to renewable energy by reducing CO2 emissions.

Based in Balingen, Baden-Württemberg, Mehrer Compression GmbH is well-regarded for its oil-free compressors and experience in process gas compression. Voith, with roots dating back to 1867, will leverage its know-how in hydraulic drive systems and hydrogen storage solutions, which include its recently approved H2 storage system for heavy-duty vehicles in Europe. Voith also intends to extend this technology globally through a joint venture with China’s Weifu High-Technology Group.

The joint development efforts will focus on creating high-pressure hydrogen compressors capable of reaching up to 900 bar, targeting applications like pipeline compression, trailer filling, and fueling station infrastructure. By combining Voith’s hydraulic knowledge with Mehrer’s mechanical compression expertise, the partnership aims to produce solutions that enhance both efficiency and environmental impact in hydrogen compression processes.

Dr. Ralf Geßlein, CEO of Voith Turbo Industry, highlighted this partnership as a pivotal step in Voith’s commitment to renewable energy and sustainable industry solutions. With a longstanding tradition in innovation, Voith is keen to contribute its expertise toward maximizing efficiency in renewable technologies.
