Vodafone Business IoT and Controlant Revolutionize Pharmaceutical Supply Chain with Real-Time Monitoring

(IN BRIEF) Vodafone Business IoT and Controlant are transforming the pharmaceutical supply chain by providing real-time monitoring for temperature-sensitive medicines. Controlant’s Saga devices, equipped with Vodafone IoT SIMs, ensure reliable global connectivity, reducing waste and carbon emissions. This solution has cut CO2 emissions by 53 kg per box of medicines, avoiding 16,700 tonnes in 2022, and increased successful delivery rates to over 99%. The partnership exemplifies sustainable innovation, helping the industry improve efficiency and reduce its environmental impact.

(PRESS RELEASE) BERKSHIRE, 25-Nov-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — The global pharmaceutical supply chain faces a significant challenge in safeguarding temperature-sensitive medicines, with $30 billion (€28 billion) worth of perishable drugs lost annually due to inadequate environmental monitoring during transit. To address this, Vodafone Business IoT has partnered with Controlant to create a more sustainable and efficient solution, reducing waste and carbon emissions in the pharmaceutical logistics sector.

A report by the Carbon Trust reveals that the Vodafone Business IoT and Controlant solution has cut 53 kilograms of CO2 emissions per box of medicines compared to industry averages, equating to a 15% reduction in the lifecycle emissions of these products. In 2022 alone, this collaboration helped avoid 16,700 tonnes of CO2 emissions.

Real-Time Monitoring with IoT Connectivity

Controlant’s Saga devices are central to this innovation, offering real-time data on the temperature, location, and light exposure of perishable medicines during transit. These reusable data loggers, equipped with Vodafone Business IoT SIMs, provide continuous connectivity across 570 networks in over 180 countries, ensuring reliable performance for international deliveries.

Gísli Herjólfsson, co-founder and co-CEO of Controlant, emphasized the critical role of Vodafone’s IoT connectivity:
“Vodafone is a leader in IoT connectivity. Without their reliable network, our devices wouldn’t be able to communicate issues in real-time. Their partnership ensures seamless operation, no matter where deliveries are headed.”

By leveraging this technology, Controlant’s customers have achieved successful delivery rates exceeding 99%, a stark improvement from the 35% loss rates previously typical for perishable goods.

Sustainability Impact

This partnership not only ensures safer and more efficient delivery of temperature-sensitive medicines but also significantly reduces the environmental impact of pharmaceutical logistics. Vodafone Business reported helping its customers avoid 32.8 million tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions in the past financial year through digital technology solutions, with IoT services contributing to 78 million tonnes of avoided emissions since 2020.

A Vision for a Greener Supply Chain

Vodafone Business IoT and Controlant’s collaboration is setting a new standard for sustainability in the pharmaceutical supply chain. Through innovative monitoring and reliable connectivity, they are ensuring safer deliveries, reducing waste, and helping the industry take meaningful steps toward environmental responsibility.
