Vienna Insurance Group subsidiary KNIAZHA VIG partners with Aon and DFC to provide expanded war risk insurance coverage in Ukraine

(IN BRIEF) Vienna Insurance Group has announced that its Ukrainian subsidiary KNIAZHA VIG has secured a 25 million US dollar reinsurance facility agreement with the U.S. International Development Finance Corporation in cooperation with Aon to support the expansion of war-risk insurance coverage in Ukraine. The facility, effective from February 2026, provides reinsurance backing for a portfolio of policies covering up to 100 million US dollars in insured assets. This arrangement enables KNIAZHA VIG to offer expanded insurance protection for static assets belonging to small and medium-sized enterprises as well as private individuals. The initiative aims to strengthen Ukraine’s economic resilience by improving access to insurance solutions that mitigate conflict-related risks and encourage private investment. The partnership also builds on earlier collaboration between Aon and DFC aimed at supporting war-risk coverage for businesses operating in Ukraine.

(PRESS RELEASE) VIENNA, 9-Mar-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — Vienna Insurance Group (VIG) has announced that its Ukrainian subsidiary KNIAZHA VIENNA INSURANCE GROUP (KNIAZHA VIG) has finalized a reinsurance facility agreement with the U.S. International Development Finance Corporation (DFC) aimed at expanding war-risk insurance coverage in Ukraine. The initiative introduces a solution designed to protect static assets against war-related risks while supporting economic resilience during the country’s ongoing recovery efforts.

The agreement was arranged in cooperation with Aon, a global professional services firm that previously worked with DFC on establishing a pioneering reinsurance facility supporting war-risk insurance policies for businesses operating in Ukraine.

Under the agreement, KNIAZHA VIG and Aon secured a reinsurance facility valued at 25 million US dollars from DFC, which came into force on 1 February 2026. The facility provides reinsurance backing for a portfolio of war-risk insurance policies covering up to 100 million US dollars in insured assets. Through this structure, KNIAZHA VIG will be able to provide expanded protection for small and medium-sized enterprises as well as private individuals across Ukraine.

The arrangement improves access to insurance coverage in an environment where conflict-related risks have made it more difficult for businesses and property owners to secure protection for assets. By strengthening reinsurance capacity, the facility allows insurers to offer broader coverage while managing exposure to high-risk events.

Harald Riener, Member of the Managing Board of Vienna Insurance Group and Chairman of the Supervisory Board of KNIAZHA VIG, said the partnership with DFC represents an important step in reinforcing KNIAZHA VIG’s contribution to Ukraine’s recovery and reflects VIG’s long-term commitment to the country. He noted that expanding insurance solutions for small businesses and individuals, alongside support for regional initiatives, helps build resilience within communities while opening new opportunities in the market.

KNIAZHA VIG is among the first insurers to conclude a reinsurance facility agreement with DFC within this initiative. The collaboration strengthens the company’s role in supporting Ukraine’s economic stability by helping mitigate conflict-related risks and encouraging private investment.

The agreement builds on earlier efforts involving Aon and DFC. Over the past two years, Aon helped establish a separate 50 million US dollar reinsurance facility designed to support war-risk insurance policies for companies operating in Ukraine.

Greg Case, President and CEO of Aon, highlighted the firm’s commitment to supporting Ukraine since the start of the war. Through partnerships with public and private institutions, Aon has worked to build a global coalition aimed at sustaining investment and economic activity in the country. The collaboration with KNIAZHA VIG and DFC applies the company’s expertise, analytics, and global network to develop innovative insurance solutions addressing complex conflict-related risks.

KNIAZHA VIENNA INSURANCE GROUP has operated as a non-life insurer in Ukraine since 1997 and has been part of Vienna Insurance Group since 2005. As a member of the VIG group, the company combines local market knowledge with European insurance expertise to develop tailored products for customers across Ukraine.
