University of Liverpool launched new course “Understanding Northern Ireland” at its campus in London

LONDON, 22-10-2014 — /EuropaWire/ — The University’s has launched a new course, Understanding Northern Ireland, at its campus in London.

The new intensive one-day course explains the historical background to the conflict in Northern Ireland within the wider British-Irish and international contexts. It was launched by the Ambassador of Ireland, Daniel Mulhall, at an event at the Irish Embassy.

The course, run by the Institute of Irish Studies, will benefit from the input of internationally-recognised experts in the field including the BBC’s special correspondent, Fergal Keane, and principal peace negotiator in the Irish peace process, Jonathon Powell.

A Continuing Professional Development (CPD) programme, it is aimed at professionals working within the education, media, political, business and humanitarian sectors.  Delegates completing the course will receive a University of Liverpool Certificate.

Professor Marianne Elliott, Director of the Institute of Irish Studies, said:  “The Institute is proud to be participating in the University of Liverpool’s new London campus programme.

“We will be running a series of intensive one-day courses.  The first  will give attendees an in-depth understanding of Northern Ireland, its history, the Troubles and the ongoing peace process.

“It will be delivered by internationally-renowned experts in the field.  It can also be transferred as a credit-bearing part of the new London-based MA in Irish Studies.”
