University of Glasgow Joins National Effort to Map Sustainability Practices Across Scottish Education

(IN BRIEF) The University of Glasgow, in partnership with the University of Stirling, the University of Edinburgh, and University College London, has launched a national survey to explore how sustainability and environmental topics are addressed in Scotland’s education system. Building on more than a decade of Learning for Sustainability being embedded as an entitlement for all young people, the survey aims to map current practices, identify challenges, and highlight opportunities for improvement. Educators from a wide range of settings are invited to participate before the October 27, 2025 deadline.

(PRESS RELEASE) GLASGOW, 11-Aug-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — The University of Glasgow is working alongside the University of Stirling, the University of Edinburgh, and University College London on a new nationwide survey aimed at understanding how sustainability and environmental topics are integrated into Scotland’s educational landscape.

The Learning for Sustainability (LfS) survey seeks to gather perspectives from educators across a wide range of settings—including schools, early years, further and higher education, community learning, museums, local authorities, and even national parks—to map current practices, highlight innovative approaches, and uncover any barriers that remain.

The initiative comes more than a decade after LfS became an entitlement for all children and young people in Scotland, and follows the recent launch of the country’s first national framework for embedding LfS in Initial Teacher Education, unveiled in April 2025.

Dr Claire Ramjan, Lecturer in Initial Teacher Education at the University of Glasgow’s School of Education, emphasized the value of diverse input: “With environmental and sustainability issues at the forefront of public concern, we want to hear from educators across all sectors. Your insights will help us build a clear picture of how Learning for Sustainability is delivered today, and identify opportunities to strengthen its role in preparing learners for the challenges of the future.”

Professor Lizzie Rushton, Head of the Education Division at the University of Stirling and Deputy Chair of the Scottish Council of Deans of Education, highlighted the importance of the project: “Education is a key driver in addressing sustainability at every level—local, national, and global. This survey will allow us to see the breadth of LfS practices in Scotland and ensure that climate change, environmental awareness, and sustainability remain at the heart of learning.”

Educators across Scotland are encouraged to share their experiences and views by completing the survey by October 27, 2025, at: https://qualtrics.ucl.ac.uk/jfe/form/SV_9Eqwij4UAm8vh1Y.
