University of Bristol’s Royal Fort Gardens Earns Ninth Green Flag Award for Excellence

The award, managed by the environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy, highlights the Gardens’ commitment to high environmental standards and their role in promoting physical and mental well-being.

Paul Todd MBE, Green Flag Award Scheme Manager, praised the Gardens as a “vital green space” for the community. The award was presented to Tom Stevens and Josh Perry, members of the Royal Fort Gardens team, at a ceremony in London.

Royal Fort Gardens, located on the University’s main campus, boast a rich history dating back to the 17th century and feature a landscape designed by Humphry Repton. The Gardens are home to art installations, a wildflower meadow, and a ‘bug hotel’ aimed at supporting pollinator populations. The Gardens also offer volunteer opportunities for students and locals, contributing to urban biodiversity and community engagement.

Tom Stevens, Horticultural Team Leader, emphasized the importance of involving the community in maintaining and enhancing the Gardens, while volunteer Max Moorcroft shared his positive experience of contributing to the Gardens’ beauty and biodiversity.
