The University of Nottingham awarded 400 students competitive international scholarships for the 2014/15 academic year

More than 400 students have been awarded competitive international scholarships to study at The University of Nottingham for the 2014/15 academic year.

NOTTINGHAM, 17-11-2014 — /EuropaWire/ — The scholarships were awarded at a special ceremony held at the University’s iconic Trent Building and hosted by Professor Michèle Clarke, Assistant Pro-Vice-Chancellor (International -Asia) and Professor Farouk Shakib, Assistant Pro-Vice-Chancellor (International – Africa and the Middle East).

The students hail from over 104 countries across all continents.

Helen Rylands, Scholarship and Sponsorship Manager at the University said: “This event is a great chance for us to celebrate the achievements of the students and for the students to meet other scholarship recipients.

“The majority of the scholarships that we offer are competitive so we’re rewarding the best students – they’ve not only got a place at Nottingham which is extremely competitive in itself but they’ve then gone on to get a scholarship. We’re rewarding the best students and we want to celebrate their achievements.”

Nottingham’s international scholarship portfolio is one of the most extensive of any UK university and includes the flagship Developing Solutions Scholarship programme. Aimed at students from Africa, India and developing Commonwealth countries, priority subjects for the scholarship include environment, health, food, science and technology.

Helen Rylands added: “The aim of the Developing Solutions Scholarship programme is to encourage students to put in to practice very quickly the skills that they have learnt at the University and make a direct impact in their local community in wide range of developing countries.”

One recipient of the Developing Solutions scholarship this year is Dr Ihsan Jibril from Nigeria, who is studying towards a Master in Public Health degree.

She said: “Without the Developing Solutions Scholarship I would not have had the opportunity to study my dream course in a university such as The University of Nottingham. I have always wanted to do something in public health and to be able to do so in the highest possible standard is something that I am eternally grateful for.”

The University also presented a number of prestigious scholarships offered in partnership with external sponsors including; CAPES, Chevening, China Scholarship Council, CONACyT, The Commonwealth Scholarship Commission, Fulbright,  Islamic Development Bank,The Open Society Foundation, Santander and Tullow.
