Telia Estonia Powers 25% of Mobile Masts with Solar, Generating 1.5 GWh Annually

(IN BRIEF) Telia Estonia has equipped nearly a quarter of its mobile base stations with solar installations—10–20 kW arrays built and operated by Sunly under a 15-year contract—yielding an estimated 1.5 GWh of renewable power annually. This innovation powers network traffic for tens of thousands of customers, increases infrastructure resilience, and aligns with Telia’s global commitment to 100% renewable energy since 2020. Future enhancements will add smart energy management and storage. Telia Company targets net-zero emissions by 2040, having already reduced operational scope 1 and 2 emissions by 80% since 2018.

(PRESS RELEASE) STOCKHOLM, 26-Jun-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Telia Estonia has become the first telecom operator in the country to outfit nearly 25% of its mobile towers with on-site solar installations. This nationwide initiative allows tens of thousands of customers to connect via networks powered by clean energy, while enhancing the robustness of Telia’s infrastructure against grid disruptions.

Under a 15-year agreement, renewable energy specialist Sunly designed, built, and now operates solar arrays ranging from 10 kW to 20 kW at sites across Estonia. Collectively, these parks are expected to generate around 1.5 GWh of electricity annually. “That’s enough to drive an electric vehicle for about 10 million kilometers,” explains Mihkel Kõiv, Network Manager at Telia Estonia.

Since 2020, all Telia networks worldwide have run exclusively on renewable energy. By adding solar capacity, Telia Estonia is diversifying its energy mix, improving both flexibility and resilience. The next phase will introduce intelligent energy management and battery storage systems to maximize self-consumption and further reduce reliance on the grid.

At group level, Telia Company aims for net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040 and has already cut its scope 1 and 2 emissions by 80% since 2018. By powering connectivity with clean energy and enabling digital transformation, Telia supports the broader shift toward a net-zero economy.
