SUEZ and PYREG Launch Integrated Pyrocarbonisation Solution to Advance Circular Waste Management and Carbon Removal

(IN BRIEF) SUEZ and PYREG have launched Pyrolis® S2B, an integrated pyrocarbonisation technology that dries and thermally converts sewage sludge into stable, PFAS-free biochar while permanently sequestering carbon and reducing waste volumes. The autothermal system uses low-energy drying followed by high-temperature pyrolysis and complete oxidation of pyrolysis gas to maximise energy efficiency and eliminate harmful compounds, making it adaptable to a wide range of municipal and industrial facilities. The resulting biochar is recognised by the IPCC as a credible climate mitigation tool and offers additional value as a soil amendment that improves fertility and water retention, as well as a low-carbon additive for construction materials. By combining SUEZ’s expertise in sludge treatment with PYREG’s advanced reactor technology, the partnership delivers a scalable, circular solution that helps operators transform problematic effluents into valuable resources while supporting the broader ecological transition.

(PRESS RELEASE) PARIS, 11-Feb-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — SUEZ and PYREG have announced the deployment of Pyrolis® S2B, a new integrated pyrocarbonisation solution designed to transform sewage sludge into high-value biochar while permanently sequestering carbon. The technology represents a major step forward in sustainable waste management and supports the transition toward a circular, low-carbon economy by converting problematic organic residues into a useful material rather than disposing of them.

In France alone, around 340 million tonnes of industrial and agricultural effluents, including municipal wastewater sludge, are produced every year. Managing these volumes in an environmentally responsible way is becoming increasingly complex, placing pressure on municipalities and industrial operators to find innovative treatment and valorisation pathways. Pyrolis® S2B addresses this challenge by integrating drying and pyrolysis into a single compact system that can be adapted to a wide range of existing facilities.

The process begins with dewatered sludge being dried using a low-energy technology developed by SUEZ until it reaches around 90 percent dry solids. The dried material is then fed into PYREG’s reactor, where it is heated to approximately 600°C in an oxygen-limited environment. This controlled thermal treatment converts the organic matter into a stable, carbon-rich biochar while also generating a combustible pyrolysis gas.

Rather than being wasted, this gas is fully oxidised at temperatures above 950°C. The heat released is used to power both the drying stage and the pyrolysis reactor, making the overall process largely self-sustaining from an energy perspective. The high-temperature oxidation step also ensures the destruction of any PFAS compounds that might be present, further improving the environmental profile of the system.

The biochar produced through Pyrolis® S2B is recognised by the IPCC as a credible tool for long-term carbon sequestration, as the carbon contained within it remains stable for extended periods. Beyond its climate benefits, the material has multiple practical applications. In agriculture, it can be used as a soil amendment that improves water retention, nutrient availability, and microbial activity, helping farmers enhance soil fertility and reduce reliance on synthetic fertilisers.

In the construction sector, biochar can be incorporated into materials such as concrete, cement, or asphalt, where it can improve performance characteristics while lowering the overall carbon footprint of these products. Because the carbon stored in biochar is effectively locked away, it can also play a role in emerging carbon credit mechanisms.

The partnership between SUEZ and PYREG combines complementary expertise in thermal sludge treatment and advanced pyrolysis technology. Both companies view the collaboration as a strategic move to accelerate the ecological transition and provide municipalities and industries with scalable, commercially viable solutions for managing organic waste streams.

SUEZ emphasised that Pyrolis® S2B strengthens its portfolio of innovative water and waste treatment technologies while enabling more sustainable resource recovery. PYREG highlighted that the solution is immediately deployable at scale and can help operators worldwide turn challenging waste into valuable, carbon-negative materials.
