Siemens Unveils New Enhancements for Sinumerik 828D CNC Controller at AMB Stuttgart

(IN BRIEF) Siemens has announced major enhancements to its Sinumerik 828D CNC controller at AMB Stuttgart, introducing new processor units and a redesigned MCP. These upgrades aim to increase productivity, sustainability, and efficiency, featuring advanced connectivity, improved cybersecurity, and digital twin technology for optimized machine operation. The updates broaden the controller’s application scope, supporting various high-demand industries.

(PRESS RELEASE) NUREMBERG, 8-AUG-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — Siemens has introduced significant hardware and software upgrades for its Sinumerik 828D CNC controller at this year’s AMB in Stuttgart, aligning with their motto “Accelerate transformation for a sustainable tomorrow.” Designed for the compact and mid-range machine market, these enhancements include new processor units and a redesigned Machine Control Panel (MCP), aimed at boosting productivity, sustainability, and efficiency in manufacturing processes.

Key Upgrades and Features

New Processor Units and Software

The latest processor units – PPU271.5, PPU270.5, PPU290.5, and PU272.5 – enable the Sinumerik 828D to upgrade to software version 5.24. This upgrade introduces the “Run MyVirtual Machine” feature, which, similar to Sinumerik One, allows NC programs to be created, validated, and optimized using a digital twin of the machine. This innovation reduces setup time by up to 20% and minimizes production risks by enabling detailed visualization of the machine’s working area, clamping, tools, and material removal. Additionally, it facilitates employee training without risking damage to actual machinery.

Redesigned Machine Control Panel (MCP)

The new Sinumerik 828D MCP enhances user-friendliness, efficiency, and flexibility with larger 12.1-inch and 15.6-inch screens and mechanical keys. The intuitive design supports a more streamlined machine operation experience. The interface can be further customized using Create MyHMI/3GL, tailoring it to specific application needs.

Enhanced Connectivity and Security

The upgraded processor units feature an X120 interface, allowing connections to external devices such as the Sinumerik HT 10 or edge devices, expanding the range of applications and productivity. The inclusion of the Ctrl-E key combination provides comprehensive energy consumption analysis, promoting transparent energy efficiency. Enhanced cybersecurity measures include a security archive, user management, and certificate storage, protecting against manipulation and product piracy.

Expanding Applications and Market Reach

These new hardware and software improvements for the Sinumerik 828D are set to enhance the use of digital twins, offering greater flexibility, productivity, and sustainability. Siemens is extending the application range for controlling turning, milling, and grinding technology across various sectors, including power and energy, electronics and 5G, and automotive.
