Siemens Debuts Eco-Friendly Control Cabinets with 70% Lower CO₂ Emissions

(IN BRIEF) Siemens Smart Infrastructure has launched the SIVACON 8MF1, the first industrial control cabinets made entirely from green steel. Produced by Alpha Verteilertechnik in Germany, these cabinets are manufactured using 100% scrap metal and wind power, resulting in a 70% reduction in CO₂ emissions compared to conventional steel. This innovation supports Siemens’ sustainability goals by offering an eco-friendly solution without compromising on technical performance.

(PRESS RELEASE) ZUG, 20-Aug-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — In a significant stride towards sustainable industrial solutions, Siemens Smart Infrastructure has introduced the SIVACON 8MF1, a new line of industrial control cabinets made entirely from green steel. These cabinets, produced by Siemens’ subsidiary Alpha Verteilertechnik in Cham, Germany, are crafted from 100 percent scrap metal and manufactured using wind power, marking a substantial reduction in carbon emissions.

The innovative production process for the SIVACON 8MF1 cabinets results in a 70 percent decrease in CO₂ emissions compared to traditional steel manufacturing methods, translating to a savings of 308 kilograms of CO₂ per unit. This development aligns with Siemens’ broader sustainability objectives under its DEGREE framework, which aims to support global decarbonization efforts in line with a 1.5°C science-based target.

Notably, the green steel cabinets retain all the technical properties and functionality of their conventional counterparts, offering industrial customers an opportunity to reduce their environmental impact without compromising on performance. As the global demand for steel continues to grow, Siemens’ introduction of this sustainable alternative highlights the critical need to innovate and decarbonize industrial production processes.
