Siemens and Koenig & Bauer Launch Automation Breakthrough for Smarter, Faster Machine Building

(IN BRIEF) Siemens and Koenig & Bauer have partnered to create a modular automation platform that allows machine builders to design, configure, and maintain intelligent machinery faster and more efficiently. Integrating Siemens’ Teamcenter and NX software, the solution leverages a digital twin approach for predictive maintenance, faster commissioning, and improved software quality. Available via the Siemens Xcelerator Marketplace, the platform is set to transform how industrial machinery—starting with printing presses—is developed and maintained.

(PRESS RELEASE) Nuremberg, 24-Apr-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Siemens is taking a major leap forward in the evolution of machine building through a new partnership with Koenig & Bauer, one of the world’s leading printing press manufacturers. Together, the companies have developed a standardized, modular automation platform that significantly accelerates the development and commissioning of industrial machinery—starting with advanced printing presses.

Unveiled as part of the Siemens Xcelerator Marketplace, this digital twin-powered solution integrates Siemens’ Teamcenter® product lifecycle management (PLM) software and NX™ design and engineering software, allowing machine builders to virtually configure, test, and optimize their machine concepts in real time. The platform creates a synchronized digital representation of the physical system, enabling faster development, predictive maintenance capabilities, and better insights through performance dashboards.

“Through our collaboration with Koenig & Bauer, we’re showing what the future of digital machine building looks like,” said Rainer Brehm, CEO of Factory Automation at Siemens. “By merging their deep industry knowledge with the Siemens Xcelerator portfolio, we’re setting new benchmarks for efficiency and adaptability in automation.”

The new platform incorporates Simatic AX, Siemens’ automation software framework that supports agile development and enhanced maintainability of programmable logic controllers (PLCs). This flexible architecture enables software developers and machine engineers to accelerate product development, ensure higher software quality, and reduce time-to-market.

“Partnering with Siemens is a crucial milestone in Koenig & Bauer’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of mechanical engineering,” said Dr Andreas Pleßke, CEO of Koenig & Bauer. “Together, we’re delivering a new era of intelligent automation that empowers machine builders to innovate faster and more sustainably.”

The collaboration also provides machine builders with tools to gather detailed condition data from individual components—key to supporting predictive maintenance strategies and increasing system availability.

The comprehensive solution will be available through the Siemens Xcelerator Marketplace, designed to give customers global access to future-oriented, flexible solutions that bridge the gap between hardware, software, and digital services.
