Shell Launches MIDEL Brand to Bolster Global Transformer Liquid Solutions

(IN BRIEF) Shell has launched its new Shell MIDEL brand, integrating its range of ester-based transformer insulating liquids into a comprehensive portfolio alongside Shell Diala GTL. This expanded offering is designed to improve energy efficiency, reliability, and environmental protection across various power network applications. The new portfolio, which now includes products for mainstream and specialised transformers, reinforces Shell’s commitment to innovation and the energy transition. It also complements the recent acquisition of MIVOLT cooling liquids, enhancing Shell’s capabilities in supporting cleaner energy solutions globally.

(PRESS RELEASE) LONDON, 2-Apr-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Shell has integrated its MIDEL range of transformer insulating liquids into its broader transformer liquids portfolio, which already includes Shell Diala GTL. Today, the new Shell MIDEL brand was launched worldwide, marking a significant development in the power energy sector. This move is aimed at driving innovation, enhancing reliability, and accelerating the energy transition for both Shell and the industry at large.

Shell MIDEL liquids are designed for a wide array of applications throughout the power network—from mainstream power and distribution transformers to specialised units used in renewable energy, rail, mining, and industrial settings. By combining Shell MIDEL’s proven ester liquid technology with Shell’s extensive supply chain capabilities, the expanded portfolio offers enhanced energy efficiency solutions on a global scale.

Jason Wong, Executive Vice President for Global Lubricants, stated, “With the addition of Shell MIDEL, we are enhancing our global offering by complementing our established Shell Diala GTL range with the outstanding properties of both natural and synthetic ester transformer liquids. Together, these products form a more innovative and comprehensive portfolio that is well equipped to meet the evolving needs of power grids worldwide.”

Key features of the new portfolio include an expanded product offering that provides a complete, end-to-end range of transformer insulating liquids; improved efficiency, reliability, and safety; increased environmental protection through the use of biodegradable and non-hazardous synthetic and natural ester dielectric fluids; and a global reach that ensures high-quality, environmentally responsible solutions are available to a broad customer base. Additionally, Shell’s recent acquisition of MIVOLT direct immersion cooling liquids—previously owned by UK manufacturer M&I Materials—further supports the company’s strategy to develop cleaner, more reliable energy solutions for electrified transport, battery energy storage systems, and data centres.
