SFC Energy Secures First Major Order for Hydrogen Fuel Cells to Support Critical Fibre Optic Infrastructure in Denmark

(IN BRIEF) SFC Energy has received its first major order for its Danish subsidiary, SFC Energy Denmark, to supply hydrogen fuel cell technology for point of presence (PoP) stations in the fibre optic network of Norlys Fibernet A/S. The order includes the delivery of 235 kW of hydrogen fuel cells to secure vital data traffic infrastructure against power outages. These fuel cells will provide a climate-neutral and reliable emergency power supply for critical PoP stations, supporting Norlys Fibernet’s sustainability efforts and increasing the resilience of the country’s broadband infrastructure.

(PRESS RELEASE) BRUNNTAL/MUNICH, 5-Jun-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — SFC Energy AG, a leader in fuel cell solutions for stationary, portable, and mobile hybrid power systems, has secured its first major order for its newly established Danish subsidiary, SFC Energy Denmark ApS. The company will provide hydrogen fuel cell technology for critical point of presence (PoP) stations in Denmark’s fibre optic broadband network operated by Norlys Fibernet A/S. These PoP stations are vital hubs in the country’s broadband infrastructure, connecting various fibre optic networks and managing large volumes of data traffic.

In total, SFC Energy will deliver hydrogen fuel cell solutions with a combined output of 235 kW to Norlys Fibernet. The order includes the EFOY Hydrogen 5.0 Fuel Cell, which will be deployed in scalable EFOY H₂Rack R5 and EFOY H₂Rack R10 units. Installation and commissioning are scheduled to take place between August and December 2025. The fuel cells will provide a reliable, climate-neutral emergency power supply, enhancing the resilience of these essential facilities. Additionally, ongoing maintenance will be handled by SFC Denmark’s technicians.

Norlys Fibernet has already equipped over 160 PoP stations with hydrogen fuel cells, which offer numerous advantages over traditional diesel generators and battery systems, including emission-free energy generation, low maintenance, and long-term reliability. This new order marks the first major collaboration between Norlys Fibernet and SFC Energy following the latter’s acquisition of Ballard Power Systems Europe’s stationary hydrogen fuel cell business in 2024.

Dr. Peter Podesser, CEO of SFC Energy, commented on the significance of the order, stating, “We are thrilled to receive this substantial order from Norlys Fibernet. It confirms the success of our strategy to expand our hydrogen fuel cell operations, especially after acquiring Ballard’s stationary business. This order strengthens our position in the growing hydrogen fuel cell market in Scandinavia and allows us to tap into the increasing demand for sustainable and reliable emergency power solutions.”

Magnus Just Olesen, COO of Norlys Fibernet, added, “Hydrogen fuel cells provide us with unmatched supply security and sustainability for our PoP stations. They are low-maintenance, climate-neutral, and support our broader environmental, social, and governance (ESG) strategy. We are pleased to work with SFC Energy to ensure the reliability of our infrastructure.”
