Selex Gruppo Commerciale signs renewable energy PPA with Iberdrola to advance decarbonization and energy cost stability in Italy

Iberdrola renewable energy installation in Italy

(IN BRIEF) Selex Gruppo Commerciale has signed a renewable energy purchase agreement with Iberdrola for 1,250 GWh of photovoltaic power, equal to 125 GWh annually from plants with 77 MW of capacity starting in July 2026. The PPA features a framework structure that allows Selex’s affiliated companies to share renewable supply under common terms, ensuring cost stability and long-term sustainability. The agreement will cut annual emissions by about 37,000 tons of CO₂, equivalent to planting 1.5 million trees, and will help Selex mitigate exposure to energy price volatility. Iberdrola, confirmed as the European leader in PPAs for the second consecutive year, strengthens its Italian presence through this deal, building on agreements with BTicino, Bayer, Acciaierie Venete, and other distribution groups.

(PRESS RELEASE) BILBAO, 10-Sep-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Selex Gruppo Commerciale has entered into a long-term renewable energy purchase agreement with Iberdrola, marking a significant step in the Group’s decarbonization strategy and commitment to sustainable growth. The agreement secures 1,250 GWh of clean electricity, with an annual supply of 125 GWh generated from photovoltaic plants and a capacity of 77 MW. Deliveries will begin in July 2026.

As Italy’s leading organized distribution network, Selex operates over 3,300 outlets nationwide under well-known banners including Famila, A&O, and C+C, alongside strong regional brands. With a workforce of more than 42,600 people, the Group recognized the need for an innovative approach to energy supply. The newly signed PPA (Power Purchase Agreement) provides a framework that allows the participating companies within the Selex network to share access to renewable energy under unified contractual terms, giving the Group both cost stability and environmental benefits.

By adopting this structure, Selex expects to reduce its carbon footprint by about 37,000 tons of CO₂ each year—an impact equivalent to planting 1.5 million trees. Beyond sustainability, the deal also helps mitigate the risks of energy price volatility, creating greater competitiveness for the Group’s retail operations across Italy.

“This agreement with Iberdrola adds significant value to the synergies already existing among our companies,” Selex stated. “It was essential to adopt a forward-looking and long-term solution that not only stabilizes energy costs but also strengthens our collective approach to sustainability.”

Iberdrola, recognized for the second year in a row as the European leader in PPAs by the Pexapark Renewables Market Outlook 2025 report, highlighted the importance of the partnership. The company has recently signed agreements across Europe with major firms including Amazon, Microsoft, Meta, Salzgitter, Mercedes-Benz, and Vodafone. In Italy, this latest deal reinforces Iberdrola’s role as a driving force in the PPA market, adding to contracts already in place with BTicino, Bayer, and Acciaierie Venete as well as other large-scale distribution groups.

“Iberdrola is proud to support Selex Gruppo Commerciale in its sustainability goals,” the company stated. “PPAs are a vital instrument for Italian industries, allowing them to decarbonize their activities while ensuring greater energy cost stability.”
