Schneider Electric partners with Climeworks in landmark agreement to remove 31,000 tons of CO₂ and support net-zero by 2050

(IN BRIEF) Schneider Electric has signed a multi-year agreement with Climeworks to remove 31,000 tons of CO₂ from the atmosphere by 2039, representing its first purchase of durable carbon removal credits and Climeworks’ largest portfolio deal to date. The partnership will use three methods—Direct Air Capture and Storage, Bioenergy with Carbon Capture and Storage, and Enhanced Rock Weathering—to ensure long-term CO₂ storage. The initiative complements Schneider Electric’s goal of net-zero across its value chain by 2050 and “net-zero ready” operations by 2030, while also helping scale carbon removal infrastructure worldwide. Both companies will collaborate on advancing technology efficiency and cost reductions, strengthening the role of durable carbon removals in the global fight against climate change.

(PRESS RELEASE) ZURIC, 22-Sep-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Schneider Electric, a global leader in the digital transformation of energy management and automation, has entered into a landmark agreement with carbon removal pioneer Climeworks to permanently remove 31,000 tons of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere by 2039. This multi-year offtake deal is Schneider Electric’s first purchase of high-durability carbon removal credits and marks Climeworks’ largest portfolio agreement to date.

Through this contract, Climeworks will deliver carbon removal using three proven long-term solutions: Direct Air Capture and Storage (DAC+S), Bioenergy with Carbon Capture and Storage (BECCS), and Enhanced Rock Weathering (ERW). Each of these technologies ensures CO₂ storage for thousands of years, helping Schneider Electric neutralize its future residual emissions while it continues its aggressive emissions reduction journey.

The agreement supports Schneider Electric’s broader climate commitments, which include achieving net-zero across its entire value chain by 2050 and reaching “net-zero ready” operations by 2030. That target requires a 90% cut in Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions from a 2017 baseline, with durable carbon removals neutralizing the small share of unavoidable emissions. By securing long-term access to high-durability carbon removals now, Schneider Electric is ensuring both readiness and resilience in meeting its targets while also helping scale an emerging industry critical to global climate goals.

Esther Finidori, Chief Sustainability Officer at Schneider Electric, emphasized the strategic significance of the deal: “Carbon reduction and carbon removal are both essential to our own net-zero journey and that of the planet. This agreement represents a major step in diversifying our carbon removal portfolio with durable solutions that complement our ongoing reduction initiatives and nature-based investments. Partnering with Climeworks, a recognized leader in this field, ensures we are backing the highest-quality solutions while also supporting the growth of an industry vital for the future.”

Schneider Electric’s climate strategy already includes scaling nature-based removals through the Livelihoods Carbon Fund and EcoAct, its carbon advisory subsidiary. By adding long-term durable removals to the portfolio, the company strengthens its position as a pioneer in corporate net-zero action.

Christoph Gebald, co-CEO and co-founder of Climeworks, welcomed the agreement, stating: “This milestone partnership with Schneider Electric demonstrates both leadership and foresight. Permanent carbon removal will only grow in importance, and early access is key for forward-looking companies. Together we are not only scaling durable carbon removal but also working to accelerate the cost-reduction pathway for Direct Air Capture, ensuring climate action and economic strategy advance hand in hand.”

Both companies highlighted the importance of long-term commitments in building the infrastructure required for carbon removal at scale. Bioenergy with Carbon Capture, Direct Air Capture, and Enhanced Rock Weathering each present distinct scaling challenges, from funding capital-intensive projects to refining monitoring and verification frameworks. Through this collaboration, Schneider Electric and Climeworks are advancing innovation and reducing costs, laying the groundwork for billions of tons of CO₂ removal needed globally by 2050.

Climeworks applies a rigorous quality assessment framework across all projects, ensuring that only third-party certified suppliers and the highest standards of trust, impact, and risk management are met. By streamlining solutions through a single contract, Schneider Electric diversifies its impact while demonstrating how corporate leadership can drive climate-positive transformation.
