RWE Begins Construction of 22.8 MW Wind Farm to Power 20,000 Homes Near Papenhagen

(IN BRIEF) RWE has started construction on a new 22.8 MW onshore wind farm near Papenhagen, Germany, with commissioning expected by mid-2026. The site will generate enough green electricity to power around 20,000 households. As part of a community benefit scheme, RWE will contribute approximately €130,000 annually to local municipalities. The project expands RWE’s presence in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and aligns with its wider efforts to scale renewable energy in Germany.

(PRESS RELEASE) ESSEN, 24-Apr-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — RWE has officially broken ground on a new onshore wind farm near the town of Papenhagen, located in the Vorpommern-Rügen district of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. The development will feature four wind turbines delivering a combined capacity of 22.8 megawatts (MW), enough to power approximately 20,000 households with renewable energy. Commissioning is planned for mid-2026.

The project follows RWE’s successful bid in the Federal Network Agency’s auction held at the end of last year. In addition to these four turbines, RWE is also managing the construction of a fifth turbine in the vicinity on behalf of a project partner.

Katja Wünschel, CEO of RWE Renewables Europe & Australia, emphasized the company’s commitment to accelerating the energy transition in Germany: “We are pushing forward the expansion of wind energy and enhancing our footprint in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. Our initiative also brings direct benefits to local communities.”

As part of its voluntary local contribution program, RWE will provide nearby municipalities with 0.2 cents for every kilowatt hour of electricity generated. For the Papenhagen wind farm, this could result in up to €130,000 in annual revenue for the local area.

RWE continues to scale up its domestic renewable portfolio. With a central office in Essen and nine regional hubs across Germany, the company is actively scouting new locations for solar and wind projects.
