RWE and KRONOS TITAN Sign PPA for 24.7 MWp Solar Farm to Power Nordenham Site

RWE and KRONOS TITAN Sign PPA for 24.7 MWp Solar Farm to Power Nordenham Site

(IN BRIEF) RWE and KRONOS TITAN have entered a PPA-based collaboration to erect a 24.7 MWp ground-mounted solar farm on a 20 hectare site at KRONOS’s Nordenham facility. With roughly 38,200 photovoltaic modules expected to generate about 22,000 MWh per year, the project will supply a significant portion of the company’s power needs. Groundbreaking is planned for summer 2025, and commissioning is targeted for spring 2026. KRONOS’s plant manager, Carsten Büsing, emphasizes the role of the solar array in advancing the firm’s sustainability goals, while RWE Renewables CEO Katja Wünschel highlights the seamless model: KRONOS contributes land, and RWE provides development, investment, and operation in exchange for a long-term green power supply under predictable terms.

(PRESS RELEASE) ESSEN/NORDENHAM, 2-Jul-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — RWE and KRONOS TITAN (KRONOS) are partnering to pioneer a large-scale renewable energy solution for industrial operations at KRONOS’s Nordenham site in Lower Saxony. Under the agreement, RWE will lease a 20-hectare parcel of land from KRONOS and develop a ground-mounted photovoltaic array boasting 24.7 MWp of peak capacity. KRONOS will then secure long-term supply of the green power via a power purchase agreement (PPA). Construction is slated to begin in summer 2025, with the solar farm expected to be fully commissioned by spring 2026.

At full operation, the installation’s approximately 38,200 solar modules will produce around 22,000 MWh of electricity annually—enough to fulfill a significant share of the site’s energy demand. This project serves as a key pillar in KRONOS’s broader transformation strategy, reinforcing the company’s dedication to lowering its carbon footprint and integrating sustainable energy sources into its industrial processes.

Carsten Büsing, Plant Manager at KRONOS TITAN GmbH in Nordenham, said, “Collaborating with RWE allows us to secure a substantial portion of our electricity from renewable sources. This solar plant is instrumental in driving forward our sustainability objectives and exemplifies our commitment to environmentally responsible operations.”

Katja Wünschel, CEO of RWE Renewables Europe & Australia GmbH, added, “This initiative demonstrates how industrial partners can actively contribute to the energy transition: KRONOS provides the land, and RWE handles the planning, financing, construction, and operation. Through a long-term PPA, KRONOS gains access to green electricity under stable, predictable conditions, while we leverage our expertise in renewables development and energy trading.”

Local residents and stakeholders have been informed about the upcoming construction, underscoring the joint venture’s transparency and community engagement.
