Russian Book of Records: Volkswagen Touareg demonstrated the greatest average speed on the ice over the 1000 km distance on Lake Baikal

On April 21 the Russian Book of Records officially confirmed the result of the Volkswagen Touareg drive “The greatest average speed developed by a stock car over the 1000 km distance”.

MOSCOW, 23-4-2015 — /EuropaWire/ — On March 20–21, 14-time motor sports record-holder Andrey Leontyev and ice captain Alexander Burmeister set an absolute record on the Volkswagen Touareg by demonstrating the greatest average speed on the ice over the 1000 km distance. They used a stock car, and standard tires and service fluids. The crew covered the 1037 km route in 19 hours 16 minutes. The average speed in motion was 69 km/h and the general average speed measured by GPS was 46 km/h.

The looped route of Andrey Leontyev’s crew extended from the southern end of Lake Olkhon to the northernmost point of Lake Baikal — the village of Nizhneangarsk, before returning to the start point. The car did not leave the ice surface over the entire route and only stopped at score and refueling points, as well as during zero visibility when required.

“The rules for setting an average speed record on ice prohibit a car to go onto land but do not prescribe it to move over a specific route. Theoretically, we could drive the required 1,000 km on a football field-sized area of flat ice. But we do not look for easy ways, so we drove across the entire Baikal to the North and back — through cracks, ice hummocks, snow… We moved almost across the entire Baikal where the weather changes 24 times in 24 hours. This is really so. It was a real adventure. And we accomplished our mission successfully. Together with the Touareg that didn’t let us down. You can undertake such an adventure only when you believe in your mate 200%. I believed infinitely in my co-pilot Sasha Burmeister. And together we believed in our Touareg. I hope it believed in us too,” said Andrey Leontyev.

To set the record, Volkswagen Passenger Cars provided a stock 204 hp Volkswagen Touareg 3.0 V6 TDI without the Off-Road package, equipped with the MICHELIN Latitude X-Ice North 2+ tires.

Three Volkswagen Touaregs were used as support cars. Two of them were diesel 3.0 V6 TDI cars (204 and 245 hp) fitted with an 8-speed automatic transmission and 4MOTION all-wheel drive. The other one was 3.6 FSI (249 hp) also fitted with an 8-speed automatic transmission and 4MOTION all-wheel drive.
